Well since our snow conditions vary so much from the rest of the state (and new England in general) I thought I'd do an ongoing thread for our trail conditions (or at least snowfall info) for the season from Berlin to Errol/Colebrook/Pittsburg area. I hate seeing people get false info from club sites that either bait you up here with promises of awesome riding when there isn't any snow (trying to get out of town $$$ when locals aren't riding) or tell you conditions are poor when, in fact, they might be great because they are trying to keep the trails from getting beat up by more traffic.

Well as of right now (Dec. 3rd, 2am) there is only a dusting on the ground. We have had very poor early season conditions, with lots of rain and warm temps. The ground is saturated with water but its not frozen yet. Hopefully we'll get some cold weather to freeze up the lakes and ground soon before a heavy snowfall insulates it. I don't see anything other than a few snow showers expected in the next 10 days, and temps don't look like they'll be much cooler. So far it doesn't look like it will be an early riding season...but lets hope we get colder weather through Dec. so we'll be ready for Jan. snow.

Well we got aprox. 4-6" of snow here in Milan. Since my last post, we have had some cold weather, and the ground seems to have frozen up pretty well. There still isn't any real ice covering on the lakes yet, but if the cold spell keeps up, they should begin freezing up nicely. No riding in this part of the state yet, it seems the southern part of the state got more snow than we did today.

I have seen that Pittsburg has been getting a bit of snow, and rumor is that some trails may open Dec. 15th. From my limited experience in the area, the trails will most likely be north of Back Lake to the Canadian border, and northeast of Young's Store. Unless we get a bit more snow, I would imagine the conditions on those trails won't be great, but should at least be enough to get out on the white stuff and stretch your legs after the summer break.

Thanks for the info Jim...

Thanks for the info Jim, keep it up. My girlfriend has family in West Milan and we will be heading up there frequently this year.

Nope, i had ring problems, using 1 qt. of oil in 100 miles toward the end. Now i have a shiny new motor, and will be on the trails as soon as they open!

For the weather update, we got another dusting last night, but not enough to speak of. The ground has frozen up nicely, and the current fridgid weather will help get the frost deeper and keep the lakes freezing. There is more snow in Pittsburg, but I don't know just how much. I may take a ride up the next time I'm in Colebrook just to see what it looks like. If we can get a couple decent storms, or one good one, the trails should be ridable!

Well its looking a bit better. We received 10-12" of fresh powder last night. Its not enough to ride on, but its getting much closer. According to the Pittsburg Ridgerunners site, there are a couple trails open to the northwest of town (west of Rt. 3) but there has been NO grooming yet, and the snowcover is still pretty thin. If you are in the area it might be worth a short ride up to get your sled in the snow, but it doesn't sound like its worth a drive up from any real distance for.

Hopefully another week or two and our northern trails will have some real riding.

I put over 100 miles on in the Swift Diamond area 12/17/05-12/18/05. Logging roads are great, but the trail getting to them is a little rough. Still no grooming as of today. I saw about 40 sleds go by camp Saturday night. I also talked with a couple of the groomer drivers this morning at the warming hut and they informed me that they are meeting Monday morning about 7:00 am and will begin to pack the trails. Looking pretty good so far.

You should have tried a bit further south. I just got back from Colebrook tonight and I have to say, their 6" is pretty lame compared to the 12" or so we received on Milan Hill. I did see lots of tracks up in that area though.

Jim

In on the Diamond we had more than 6" of new snow. There was 10-12" easy and even more higher up. I did see that Colebrook had around 6" though. Still not bad compared to previous years.

Just some pics from this weekend. Not to bad for a cell phone camera.

The pics are in the Swift Diamond Riders Trail system. My camp is located on NH Cor #18 near mile marker #12. The Pic of the sleds is on trail 134 on the Cave Mountain portion of the trail.
