Oil Burn-Blow by-Theory

Why did you pull apart the engine? Noticable problems with how it ran, blowby, or what? Just wondering why you have it apart with so few miles...pulling it apart because of the ring problem, or if you found it while you had it apart for another reason.

Just curious was your plug reading considerably diferrent than the others? What made you check the compression?

plug reading was close to the others but was putting way to much oil in air box.oil light would come on before end of long ride.

Thats exactly the symptoms I have. I did notice when I changed my plugs (sled was still running fine) that 1 or 2 were a little darker than the others, but I attributed it to too much choke usage. I'm not liking what I'm hearing...I hope I don't have it as bad. Hows everything else look? Just how many parts are you going to have to put in it? Just a re-ring, or does it need more?

ck compression before you think you have the same problem.i have not heard of any one else with low compression yet.

Where did you get a compression gauge to fit that plug thread? I can't find one in a aprt's store, and my Snap-On kit doesn't have that thread (automotive set). The dealer won't even tlak to me about it, because they want business.

High silicon-content ceramic-composite cylinder sleeves ensure greater heat dissipation for consistent power delivery and reduced friction.

this is the stuff I was talking about

in yamaha tech tips, subject:excessive oil consumption. its considered normal to use up to 1 quart per 1000 miles,so this for using more than that.okay first.check oil only if fully warm , min 10 minutes running time.do not add oil unless level reaches the "E" mark on the dipstick. e does not mean empty.do not fill above f. if excessive oil consumption is confirmed, SHOCK TREAT the engine using yamaha RING FREE fuel additive in the fuel tank to remove internal engine deposits. following the directions on the container, use 2 oz of ring free per gallon for 2-3 tanks of fuel. after this treatment, the oil and filter must be changed.use yamalube 4-s 0w-30 synthectic blendoil.they also say to continue to use ring free at 1 oz per10 gallons of fuel to prevent deposits.hope this helps

Well now that the sled is in the garage I opened up the airbox and checked things out. It has been the common theory that the oil used goes out the breather into the air cleaner. Well my airbox has a few drops of oil, maybe 1/4 of a teaspoon, in it. I owuld hardly say that thats where my 8+ quarts that I went through last season went. That airbox should have been soaked, and the bores of the carbs should have been soaked with oil. I own Jeeps that have blow-by and use a quart of oil every 1,000 miles, and the airboxes are soaked with oil, the filters become saturated, and the oil drips everywhere. I would think the same thing would happen here, especially with 1 quart every 200-300 miles. I still haven't gotten the adapter for my compression gauge, so I haven't done a compression test.

RX1 mountain man what was your compresion on all 4? Mine right now is 160 on all 4.
