Oil Change Access

Definitly. I will add two little holes to get those two bottom bolts on chaincase. It will still come off with plate on.

There is still the clean up issue, an ounce of oil especially gear oil can migrate over a fairly large area and collect a lot of crap.
The time it takes to remove the skid plate is still probably less than the cleanup time later.

No way. Oil will come out those holes and Brake clean will follow. My skid will never be removed. No reason to.

It doesn't mater to me if takes 8 or 10 or however many hours to do a service to my satisfaction.
I'm not paying $110.00 an hour to my dealer to do it so if I spend an extra .5 or .75 hr. to do my service (oh well).

Starting my skid plate install today. It looks like by the brake I need to remove a screw and drill out a rivet on my RR machine as the holes in the plate align with these fasteners.

Skid is awfully tight fitting over the OE plastic brake skid. Pics to be edited in as I progress.

i took both factory "baby" skids off, and i reused that screw and clip off the brake disc one

I picked up one of the BOP beefed up oil access covers, and it is substantially thicker than the factory aluminum. If I just cut a hole out of the plastic rear skid plate so that I can access that cover (without re-using the plastic over the BOP plate) would that cause problems with ice/snow buildup under the skid plate? I realize the BOP plate would not give as much protection as the rear skid plate, but I would think that overall, it would provide quite a bit of protection, and avoid a lot of extra work when doing the oil change. Any thoughts?

I cut the access in mine, but it leaves a thin strip that would probably get ripped off if the plastic was not reinstalled. If you leave out the plastic insert then you'd probably best trim this strip right from the start.

Yes it would for sure snag on something. With full skid plate I would use the stock thin plate.

Mine has worked great. No damage at all last season and oil and chaincase changes were so easy! Highly recommend this setup.

Are we talking about the Yamaha brand plastic skid plates? Front and rear?

Thanks

Thanks. I'll get them ordered!
Imo I don't really think the the front skid is necessary. I am on my third winter without a front skid but I have the Yamaha sport bumper that protects that area.
