If you already have the skid protector take it off and you will be able to see where the 4 bolts that hold the oil access plate imprinted on your skid protector. Take out the 4 bolts and plate and align the plate up with the bolt imprints on the protector and use a sharp edge and scratch a mark all the way around it. Than carefully cut plastic and drill holes and countersink them as Cannondale mentioned. My new screws I got from a fastener store and the heads are tapered and 1/4 longer than originals. Hope this helps if anybody wants to try this.Awesome job!!! Should make a template that we can print and do the same thing. I want to hole saw a drain hole for the tank... draining the tank is always a fricken mess.

has anyone tried getting to the filter through the side ? is it possible by removing muffler or secondary on the other side ? just a thought I just got mine yesterday and haven't really looked yet.
Yes you could get though the side. I know a member mentioned he does it. I don't know how you can get to the engine drain bolt through the side though, and he hasn't answered when asked. It would be a hassle unless you skipped that step and only drained from the tank. IMO it's more of a hassle than just pulling the skid plate off, which is easy, just a step we all would rather skip.

Pain in the #%$ to go through the side. Less work to remove 4 bolts and take access cover off.

I have a lot more than 4 bolts . I have the rear skid put on and it would be a real serious job getting that off.Pain in the #%$ to go through the side. Less work to remove 4 bolts and take access cover off.
I did it no problem. Remove muffler
You got the engine oil drain bolt out through the side also? Or did you just drain the tank?

Great job on the access plate !! I am going to use a hole saw to cut out a hole for the reservoir tank and use an old belly pan clutch bolt plug for the hole
I hope the new tank they are coming with drain is in same spot. May want to use a bottle cut to fit in meantime since you may need a new tank down the road.

The Viper as is has the easiest oil change of any Yamaha. Like said just use the cut bottle.
Got my skid mounted. DO NOT CUT HOLE UNLESS SKID HAS BEEN FULLY MOUNTED MEANING EVERY NUT AND BOLT! I messed mine up by not following bleed yamahas instructions exactly. Made best of it and should be okay. I wanted white so had to get a cat one. I believe for 1100. Muffler is in different spot so need to make a cut for that. Also needed to heat and bend it a bit for tight fit on upper right. Was a lot of work but it's never coming off. Bleedyamaha thanks for your great idea. I needed skid badly but was avoiding it because of oil change access. Not sure if white is available but if it is for sure get a Yamaha one so it fits correctly. Otherwise this is only choice. I did use some stick on foam in a few spots I thought snow would get in. Will see if it survives.
Did you guys with skids cut this area out to restore hole?
