Phazer Exhaust Gasket Change

put on a nice heavy glove and cover the exhaust while its running. If it doesnt kill, or takes a while to kill, its time for some new donuts.

Personally, I ran copper donuts in the apex, and will in teh phazer when the ones in there wear out. IMO they are worth it to not have to worry about them again for thousands of miles. Dont bother with the high temp copper gasket sealant, it will break down and end up causing your Y-pipes/header to wear out, making it so not even new donuts will work.

So is this pop on decelleration causing damage, or just an annoyance?
I just did a quick test, a towel folded in quarters with a gloved hand over the exhaust. Held it for 12-13 seconds, engine dropped some rpm, but stayed running until my hand was too hot to hold.

Problem is It will be a real stretch to get the parts and some late nights to get it done up before my next trip - should I ride as as?

over time, bad donuts can wear/distort/crack the Y Pipes.

Its really fast and easy to change these.

Somebody pass the dognuts. Mine stayed running as well. This write up will help ;)

It will also burn through the heat shield. Don't forget that the fuel tank sits just above the exhaust so...

I made it to about step 9 in 40 minutes. As is typical I doused the garage with gas, should have siphoned some off.

I ordered part number 5 in the attached image. What keeps the system from leaking where the 2 pipes go to 1?

It's welded together at the Y joint.

My gaskets finally came in after a 2 week wait, got it done and out for a shakedown ride. Old gaskets were still intact, but pretty much disintegrated in my hand. New ones slid in easy, but I still have the pop when decelerating. I suppose I'll stop worrying about it, or maybe lean it out a bit to see if that cleans it up.

It may be a leak at the head pipes or accordions or where your aftermarket exhaust is clamped on. Dont lean it out because of that pop if its running good. Check your plugs.
