Primary clutch exploded


Something to ponder..... a 4 arm clutching spreads the load out over 4 rollers, so there’s actually less force per roller. I would think that helps with wear.
 
Those that don’t do FB, just create a pseudo name so you can go incognito.
 
If you read the posts on Facebook, everyone in AC world is having issues just like we are, here is a snap shot I found funny thing, guy in post is recommending a Yamaha clutch for his AC, and here we are doing the opposite. Lmao. It’s safe to say, no clutch can handle the awesome power of the Yamaha 998turbo fully tuned.

Steel expands less than aluminum, it’s either bullshit or these guys don’t know what there talking about.

I have all kinds of arctic cat friends and they have no issues with their team drive clutches. On the other hand, our Yamaha clutches have been problematic with just roller bushing wear alone.

I have on cat friend that has been running STM Primary, and is giving it up to go back to the team drive clutch as he also has seen no failures with the new revised team. Go figure.
 
It’s because they can’t get YAMAHA out of their heads, after market 4 arm makes sense distributing the force on four weights, if YAMAHA built one ,no one on here would comment. I’m here to learn what works best on my sled let it be AC or YAMAHA these sleds are the same, the Suzuki 2 cyclinder never had problems with clutches, harmonics I put on miles without belt wear after lining motor up/ tcl delete, so far without spending a lot of money, I’m staying with the TEAM clutch which works better, then when it snows next year I’ll have a TAPP, I have three friends running Yamaha I bought AC because of the great deal leftover with QS3 shocks . I’m glad I did, I don’t care what sled I ride as long as it is a TURBO

There all having problems because of this great harmonic motor 998 just have to figure out how to fix it
 
IMHO Yamaha should go back to the drawing board and make at minimum a 4 arm primary, maybe a 6 arm. It might need to weigh a bit more too, where ever that sweet spot is to help smooth out some of the harmonics. It stands to reason the roller life should get better.......but this is wishful thinking I guess. Heck they can't even remedy the Tuner skis. That seems to be a very wide consensus that those skis are junk.
 
I've read enough on FB over the yrs to conclude its not where I want to be. Facebook for the most part has far too much mis-information and I believe these forums have the most accurate info, especially when it comes to the Winder. Guys here will quickly correct inaccurate posts so the average guy is not making mistakes working on his sled.

I know many guys who hangout on FB, and they are always spouting off stuff, mostly all INCORRECT, overblown or exaggerated. Im sure there are some smart guys over there but I am not a fan.

Bottom line, look at your primary's every ride gang. Catch the problem before it becomes catastrophic. Playing with 270+ hp is a simple reality now with the 998, and guys need to become savvy with more then just their right thumb.

I am into other things so I use it mostly for personal interest pages. The social thing with other people gets old fast. My brother in law won't go there either, calls it brag book. My co-worker calls it stalker book. ;)
 
Having run the current style Yamaha primary, since a 1995 VMAX4, on numerous Yamaha's, I now have so many tools and spare parts, including complete primaries for everything but the SW, I would find it hard to change brands of clutches. I am hoping Hurricanes stub shaft works out to be a solution so that if I end up with a 998 Turbo I can still use a Yamaha primary even though I may use one from an Apex. I have at least 3 complete Apex primaries sitting around...two of them brand new.
 
Not saying the primary is Perfect. But how MANY have blown apart?? What did I miss? Seems stockers are doing it? So why does it matter if your tuned or not? Just trying to understand what the hysteria is about. 5300 miles on mine ONLY thing replaced on primary was rollers. Only because I figured 47oo miles was time. They looked great honestly. Still have them for spares. I have had a 911 cover on primary since day one. Not seeing any issues of wear or concern. I’m not trying to diss anyone concerned with a clutch blowing apart up top by any means. Just wondering if these things have a manufacture number or something to track build dates. Bad run or defective clutches right from where ever they are made? Certain years sleds doing it? The 911 cover helping with this issue? We need to look for a pattern of some kind. Someone want a set of stock rollers with 4700 miles to see the wear?
