Radiator vs Rear Heat Exchanger on 136" Attak

Hopefully you guys don't mind another thread from me.

So now that I'm in the home stretch with some of the sled projects on my Attak, I'm giving a second thought on installing the rear heat exchanger, since I haven't added antifreeze yet, so I wouldn't have to drain again...

Anyway, I read a bunch of threads looking at part numbers and stuff, and then came across folks commenting on the alternative option of installing a radiator on the Apex vs the rear heat exchanger. So this brings me to my question...the previous owner said he never had overheat issues. But I don't know what type of conditions he rode in, maybe he was lucky.

From what I read, all folks with the radiator and no rear hx did not have issues with overheating. So it seems like it's a radiator or rear hx to help with overheating problems. I have the radiator and fan. And from looking at parts diagrams for my 07, and even in 06, they all have it. So why so many recommendations to just put a rear hx in?

Are the threads I read on a subset, and other folks do have problems with overheating, even with the radiator? Are all the recommendations to add the rear hx because some forget the Attaks have the radiator?

I'll add the rear hx if I need it, but I wonder if I do. Maybe I should wait, and ride the sled this season first, and see what the results are...

they all came with the rad by the right foot well. over heat is a minor issue mostly on extreme cold days when you don't get enough snow thrown up by the track. rear heat exchanger will prevent any overheat issues. That said I never had on in mine and I would get the temp light from time to time and when I did I would dive off trail and get some fresh snow. Ice scratchers will also fix it for less money. it is not a bad idea and now would be the time. the choice would be up to you.

Thanks. I have cable scratchers that I will be installing as well. I need to figure out where though, as there isn't much space on the rail for them.

So on the rear heat exchanger, sounds like it certainly doesn't hurt and could still help. I was so overwhelmed with everything I had going on a couple of weeks ago I couldn't even consinder adding one more thing to the mix.

From everything I read, I need kit 8EP-RHECR-KT-00. Sound right?

If you are running scratchers I would not invest in a cooler. Scratchers work phenomenal on icey hard pack trails. I used to build my own coolers and sell them , but after I tested scratchers I felt they were better and more economical solution for my customers.

Check out my scratcher mounts I offer for putting them on skis. Very simple and effective. The 136 skis does not offer a a good spot for installing on rail with no interference.

A call to Travis will get you fixed up on parts. the scratchers can go in many different locations be sure if you pick a spot on the rails that nothing from above will hit them when you bottom out. many have mounted to front skis and Travis has made a ski mount that is awesome as well. as long as they hit the snow under the sled they will do their job because the track brings the dust created back around by the fact that it is spinning.

LOL. Thanks guys. When I looked at the current pricing of that rear hx kit, I all but fell over. $350? Crazy. Travis, I did see your ski mounts before and have thought about them. They mount on the inside of the ski right? I don't have Yamaha skis though, rather C&A skis. I assume it doesn't matter though? I need to take another look. I like the idea of mounting them to the ski actually, vs the rail...more snow for the hyfax up front.

when i first bought my apex back in 07 i ran in some low snow conditions for a few miles and my temp light would lite up....mine was a 121' with just the straight crossover tube at the rear , i replaced it with a used exchanger from the attack model and
the light never came on again . think i paid 50 bucks for it.

If I could find a used exchanger I would do it. But not for $350 new. I can get a used one that has pick damage and needs some welding. Not sure I want to go that route.

17,700 miles on my last Apex and never had the temp light come on, make sure your coolant is mixed correctly and no air in the system.

Thanks. I'll forgo the rear exchanger. I have the radiator, plus I'll be putting the scratchers on. And the AF is new, as I replaced both HXs under the running boards, so I had to drain it. Using premixed 50/50...I will bleed when I refill (haven't refilled yet).
