RS mechanical cam chain tension problem bulletin

I think I read your post and thats why I took mine into Sheboygan Yam. The techs there said that Yamaha is not reimbursing them enough for how much work it was to replace. If you here anything different let me know. This will be on my mind all winter, because it could take out the motor!

Sorry to here that! They told me to let people know they would replace it. That was when I picked mine up. Guess I got lucky by bringing it there in the spring. I was going to wait until fall at first. I will call there sometime this week to see if they say something different.

Sounds good maybe a little pushing will make my winter a little easyer. I know if the people that owned SYI before would here both my sleds would be dun already. RIP Deano hope your sledding up there! :yam:

Well, just to talked to Shawn at Sheboygan Yamaha. Turns out my sled was the first one they did. Yamaha did not reimburse them enough for the labor. They only paid one hour of labor. Shawn said it took him 5 hours. Therefore, they are not going to replace it unless it is making noise. He said you will definitley be able to here the noise if it starts. That is just too bad. Good luck everyone!

OK, Update on my sled. I just got off the phone with my dealer, Nelson's Speed Shop, in Greenville Michigan. They said my sled is making the noise they are looking for, and it will be covered on my extended warranty. My sled is an '06 Nytro with 4560 miles on it. If its not making noise, most dealers won't touch it, warranty or not.
The folks at Nelson's are really nice to work with, and very helpful, my new favorite dealer. The sled was not bought there either.
I hope this helps.

My motor is verrrrrrrrry quiet... Even the clutch is quiet.. Hmmmmmmmmmmm.. I "WILL" keep an ear open this winter. MM.

Sounds like you have a good one, maybe you'll never have the problem.

This is the first I heard of this issue. My 06 Vector has 8600 miles on it. Since I was going to do a bunch of work on it anyway like change out all the front A-Arm bushings, I might just have to get the upgraded part even though just to keep that off my mind this winter.

I have a 07 RageGT that sounded like a cement mixer at the end of last season. I thought it was the clutch, but after reading this post I think its something else.

The noise doesn't start until the sled is good and warm. The clutch is noisy, but there in more noise coming from the valve cover area.

What's the problem with the tensioner that's in this machine?

Does the old part just loose it's tension or does the new one have more tension?

What other parts are required besides the tensioner are required to fix it 8ES-12210-01-00 TENSIONER ASSY

My dealer changed out my tensioner last april. He says that the tensioners should be changed and the timing chain needs to be inspected along with both top and bottom gears. The existing tensioner cannot be bench tested to determine its condition or its future life expectation. I was ready to pay the $700 fee but, Yamaha did this under some sort of extended warranty at no cost to me. Apparently it is a critical situation. 05 Vector ER.

I stopped in to my local dealership the other day to ask them about this issue. They were completely clueless about it and had no idea what I was talking about. I gave them a copy of the bulletin that I had printed from this site. They read it and told me I was all set. They told me that the bulletin was just to let them know that there was a new part to supersede the old one. I asked them if I should take my sled in so they could check it out and see if it was making noise. They said there was no need, nothing to worry about!!! Sometimes I think that they know nothing about sleds other than how to sell them.

It kind of makes you wonder why Yamaha hasn't at least sent some kind of a notice, to all the dealers about the problem, so they are not in the dark when a customer brings it up. Thats a shame.
I feel very lucky that I was able to find a dealer that would work with me, and get it taken care of under the extended warranty.

O.K. - not to be a kill-joy, but does 10 people on a TY message board, out of all the Vectors sold in the world, yield a catastophic, monumental quality recall? Get back to me when you have the facts on how many of these tensioner failures have been documented and determined to be quality related. While you're at it, give me the total number of potential models and motors this failure could pertain to. I would be curious to see if the failure rate is anything over 0.5% or 1/2 percent for you non mathematical types.

I talked to my dealer about this - actually he talked to me about it. He brought this specific thread to my attention, and at the time I had forgetten I read it. He pretty much said this is a very statistically small number of people having a problem and internet blowing it out of proportion. I don't want to misquote, though I'm not naming the dealer anyway, but I believe he said not one sled they had sold came back to them with this problem.

Just another side of the story.

10 people may represent a great number because most vector owners never come to this site at all. I personally had troubles with idler wheels and my oil tank leaking - issues documented by just a *few* people on this site. When I went to the dealer about both these issues, I got the lame response that I had to bring in my sled and let them do the repair - even though I had the idlers in my hand at the dealer. (I had a friend weld the crack in my oil tank at n/c).

Bottom line is that each person with an issue on this site probably represents many.

The tech bulletins are on the computer system for the dealers to read, if they feel so inclined to go through them. I would guess 99% of the time that they only get read when something comes into the shop with an issue and they need more info about it.
