I went out just after noon today. I rode alone up the valley to our cabin on the lake. All was well up there, I returned home to meet up with my riding buddy Odd Steffen, he was off duty from 2 pm.
Start odo.
Today weather was just perfect, no wind, blue skies and sunshine, temps were -8C or 17F at home. At our cabin temps were -13C or 8F. Pic taken outside our house.
A few miles from home, on the edge of the arctic ocean. The fjord is frozen for about 5 miles out. The Nieidan mountain range in the background to the left.
Pics shot up the valley from the sea shore. First one is towards the south east where you can see the eastern mountain range, the second towards the south west where you can see part of the Nieidan mountainrange and the Gaissa mountain range.
Entering the Rochi valley, first pic is towards the east, the second towards the west (the back course)
Home again, waiting for my riding buddy Odd Steffen to show up.
A few minutes later he was ready to go. The turbos outside my house.
Up in the Lemmivarre mountains, this is a lower mountain range lying between the mountains in the east and the mountains in the west. Highest peaks reach about 1100 ft above sealevel.
On our way up one of the many valleys in this rocky area.
The turbos shot in the back course.
More pics from this rugged mountain.
Almost on top of Lemmivarre.
A small cabin called "gamme" built the way our ancestors did hundreds of years ago. It is acutally possible to live inside on of these buildings for shorter periods, they get really warm inside when you lite up the stove with some dry birch firewood.
The lake close to the "gamme" cabin.
On top of Lemmivarre looking towards the southeast. The Gagga mountain in the distance.
A view to the mountain Gussavarri in the eastern mountain range.
A view to the northwest towards the Nieidan mountain range.
Starting the desent into the Rochi valley. The mountain Gagga in the distance.
Close to entering the Rochi valley. The Rochi valley below.
The Rochi valley, the Gagga mountain in the distance.
A view to the southern part of the Rochi valley.
The turbos
It's getting dark. We are on our way back home.
End trip.
End odo.
We had a blast riding today, always nice to have a riding buddy to keep you company
Odd Steffen, I'm glad you could join me on todays ride.
When darkness came upon us the temps dropped fast. Down in the Rochi valley temps were about -25 C or -13 F at the coldest. At home temps were down at -15 C or 5 F.
BTW - the turboes rock

I rode my sled to the dealer to change out the rubber boots underneat the ski spindle.
Out testriding on lake Josefvann in the Rochi valley.
The trail down the valley.
When at home I took my youngest daughter out for a ride on her sled, she says the turbo sled is her sled and the '05 candy red RX-1 is her sisters sled
End trip.
End odo.
Today was a test ride with the new mountain skis installed. I have been out once before with the mountain skis but I had the wrong rubber boots installed. Got the correct set from my dealer today and got them installed. It steers very nice with little effort both on trail and off trail.
I also took my girls out for a spin in the afternoon

Today I went for a short ride in the nearby Lemmivarre mountainrange. I stopped on a small lake and shot a few pics of my sled and the surroundings.
Further up the mountains I found these snow drifts, man they are getting big even tho we have low snow conditions this year.
On top of the mountain range.
I found this tree totally eaten up by a moose.
It was a short ride in my backyard.
End trip.

Weather was nice but rather windy. Snowdrifts were forming all over the place. My new mountain skis really came in handy riding a lot in loose snow. I love the Apex mountain skis, they do work very well when riding off trail

That is a huge drift...
I am always facinated with what the wind and snow can do.

Went out riding with my riding buddy Odd Steffen today. We took off just after noon for a trip up into the mountains. Weather was calm with slightly overcast, temps were about -10C or 14F.
Start odo.
Odd Steffen and the turbos outside my house.
First stop was up on the river in the Rochi valley.
I had a few things to look after at my cabin on the lake so we decided that would be our next stop.
The turbos at my cabin.
We talked about where to go next; visit a friend staying in a tent up on the mountain plateu in the east or heading out west where the clouds where breaking up and we figured we might see the sun. We decided on going up into the mountain plateu to the west. Next pics were taken just above the treeline.
The trees in the small valley in the next pic are the last trees for a hundred miles. On our way out west into the Gaissa mountain range.
Up on the mountain plain.
The montain Vuorji in the distance.
The gaissa mountain range.
The mountain Vuollanjunnisgaissa.
Vuorji is getting closer.
Riding conditions are excellent. A feet or two of fresh powder on the plain
made off trail riding a dream
Could one ask for more ? This is the best conditons I have ridden in this season.
Up on the lake Leavnnjasjavri in between the Vourji and the Gaissa mountain range. We have some big shutes, but too little snow to climb them this year.
End trip.
End odo.
Sightings:
Today - 2 ravens and 1 eagle
Few last rides - a few grouse, a mountain fox, a dozen of crows, a few sledders
Yet another great day of riding, always nice having a buddy to ride with
We are going out again tomorrow morning. If weather allows we may cross the plains to the south riding into the town of Kárášjohka, where the parliament of the Sami people is placed. Kárášjohka lies in the middle of the Sami heartland, or Sápmi as it is named in the Sami language.

More great pics Jan-Ove; you are surrounded by truly majestic scenery. While I would prefer a 3 foot hardpack railbed and a turbo, there is something awesome about being able to see for miles around you. It is a different type of beauty.
Cute kid too.

Me and my buddy Odd Steffen was out again today. We had some progamming of his engine management system planned today, which took some more time to finish than estimated, so we started out kinda late at 2.30 PM.
A few pics of his sled hooked up to the computer.
Programming boost levels aka boost MAP.
Start odo.
The turbos outside my garage.
Weather today was sunny, hardly no wind, with temps at -10C or 14F. First stop at lake Sunnvann.
Starting the decent down into the Rochi valley, the lakes in the distance.
Today we decided to ride up into the montain plains in the east. Our destination was a cabin up in the Luostejohka valley at lake Urvann. Some people we know where supposed to be up at the cabin so we wanted to pay them a visit.
Heading to the east, one mile above the treeline.
Looking back to where we came from, the sun on it's way down.
Arriving at Loustejohka valley. The trail straight ahead goes up into the upper part of the Luostejohka valley and ends up at the foot of mountain Suonjirgaissa seen in the distance. At this point we had to take a 90 degree turn towards the south onto another trail passing close by the cabin we were to visit.
Arrival at the cabin at lake Urvann. Just as we assumed, they had already arrived ahead of us, nice entering a fully warmed up cabin
Temps outside the cabin was -16C or 3F.
A few pics of the surroundings outside the cabin.
My friend decided to stay the night with his friends at the cabin. I decided to return home before darkness, because temps usually starts dropping fast a few hours after sunset. On my way back home fog started to form on the plain as the temperature started to drop.
When entering the forest further down in the valley temps were a little warmer and I had a very nice ride back home
End trip.
End odo.
Sightings: 2 adult female moose appeared on the trail, as I approached they walked into the forest and turned to look at me.
Sorry no pics, it was too dark for shooting pics, and they were too close for my likings. Female moose have a reputation of having a temper. They are rather big animals and my sled and I were very small compared, so I watched them carefully while driving slowly by.

Me and my 4 year old went out for a short spin in our backyard. She wanted to go sledding so off we went

Our snowlevel are close to the lowest in memory. We also have high winds blowing every winter, that doesn't help much :-(
Drifts are still up to 25 ft in places but the wind side of the hills have allmost no snow left. The mountain region above the treeline have more snow, but still way less than average. The shutes are not ridable as you can see, decent would be a hazardious adventure as there are too little snow to cover the rocks, I don't dare climbing the shutes this winter.

Weekend trip with the family to our cabin on the lake.
Start odo.
Loading the Nila sleigh, getting ready to go fishing on lake Ceagguljavri near by.
To get to lake Ceagguljavri we had to cross lake Gagga to the north and climb the hills on the northern shores of lake Gagga. We drilled holes in the ice at the southern shores of the lake. The pic below shows a Mora ice drill, makes a 150 millimeter or 6" hole int the ice.
It's by time the kids starts to learn how to catch food by themselves
The youngest one thought she got one, but when I checked it was nothing. When I took up the hook the bait was gone. I installed a new bait and dropped the lure, I caught a fish right away, I told it was her fish I got. We got another one just after that, the ones we caught today was too small so we let them go. Kids loved fishing, so now I have to buy them proper rods to catch the 5 pounders, Throut that is.
It was blowing gail force winds so it got cold pretty fast, it was a short fishing lesson on the lake
. I love it when kids take up on one of my big interests, fishing that is.
Before leaving home on sunday afternoon we decided to make a campfire to roast a few hot dogs
End trip.
End odo.

Test and tune day on the lake with friends
Start odo.
Before takeoff, outside my friends garage. The turbos ready for takeoff, from the left: '06 Attak MCX turbo, '03 RX-1 MCX turbo, '07 Phazer FX MCX turbo
Man - the 2smokers do smoke A LOT.
The Phazer FX, and the smoker in the background smoking LOL
End trip.
End odo.
Tuning on the lake went well. We also did a lot of friendly dragracing, the old '03 RX-1 did dominate
It's all in the tune
Last ride today was riding my '05 RX-1 to the dealership. I'm putting her up for sale, a new ride are planned for next season. Last pics shot of her outside the dealership. You served me well, bye-bye.

Today I did some exploring, I was out riding in the Nieidan mountain range for the first time this season. This mountains are huge and steep. Heavy winds are constantly blowing this high up keeping snow cover at a minimum no matter how much snowfall we have in a winter.
Start odo.
First pic is shot on the Lakselva river just before the trail takes off and up the side of the Nieidan mountain range, approx. 8 kilometers or 5 miles from home.
The pass I have to climb up thru.
The foot of the mountain, the climbing begins. You better run studs cause it is a icy mountain due to the (allways) low snowconditions.
These pics are shot 2/3 up the mountain.
Finished climbing, just about to entering the pass.
Next pics are shot a few miles later, just left the pass. I'm on top of the mountain before heading down into a valley on the mountain plateu. The mountain Divvgagaissa in the distace. That mountain wall is just HUGE, way too steep to be climbed by even the thoughest of hill climbers.
A few miles later, down in the valley on lake Vuoddejavri.
Due to the heavy winds, allways houling thru this mountain region, it's hardly any snow left. It's allways like this up there, no matter the snowfall we get.
The mountain Bieggavakkegaissa in the distance, altitude 1099 meters or 3608 ft. The summit are up in the clouds.
Overviewing the Lakselv valley. Town of Lakselv and the Porsanger fjord bottom in the distance to the north.
On my way down from the Nieidan mountainrange, kinda steep decent.
Sidehilling
Almost down. There are a fence to protect sledders to drive off the mountain side.
The hill side where I came down, notice the fence.
I continued my ride up the Lakselv valley, when I reached the Merddavarri mountain I did some more exploring cause I have not ridden up there in decades.
I rode uphill until there where no snow left. I knew it would not be cause at this place there are never any snow. I decided to turn around, I didn't want to ride on rocks and gravel for a few hundred meters or 500-600 ft.
I shot these pics of the valley below, kinda scenic don't you think
I returned down into the Lakselv valley and continued my ride up the valley to the south. On top of the mountain Silbačohkka I met a friend, we talked about our last few rides and our sleds for an hour before I continued towards the village of Skuvvanvarri. Just before the village on the lake Bajit Leavdnjajavri or lake Øvrevann in norwegian I had a mishap
While riding on the trail across the lake, all of a sudden I went airborne, but not the sled, go figure
The sled went one way and me the other way. Thanks to wearing a helmet with goggles and face mask, not to forget wearing my TekVest, I did not hurt myself too much. I hurt my right hand pinky finger, my neck are still a little stiff from stretching the muscles. My back is just fine thanks to the TekVest
After rolling around in the snow until I came to a stop I thought of 2 things, 1st. am I hurt? I could stand up and move and I didn't feel any pain, so no I was not hurt. 2nd. how about my sled? 30 meters or 100 ft further down the trail my sled stood waiting for me, the only thing that had happened to it was it had stopped ideling. I cranked it over and it started right away.
I cleaned out my helmet, my eyes and my goggles for snow and drove back to figure out what had happened.....I have no clue....I could not find anything on the trail that could have caused what just happened. At one point on the trail my skis all of a suffen turned to the left hard and the sled took off from the ground, some distace further down the trail the sled had landed rubber side down and continued rolling until it came to a stop???? I have just installed a set of Yamaha Apex Mountain skis with real deep keels, could that be it causing this to happen???
Sorry, no pics. I was too shaky to remember taking pics.
I drove a few more miles to our cabin on the lake Gagga where I stopped for lunch.
On my way back home I shot this pic of a man in the mountain
End trip.
End odo.
Lesson learned! I cannot stress this enough.
ALWAYS WEAR PROTECTIVE GEAR WHEN RIDING YOUR SLED!
I'm glad I did, and that I did not get hurt in the fall, puh. Told wifey and my kids what happended, I scared both them and myself today.
