Second ride report

Here is a picture of a good friend and riding buddy, 23 year old Riley Mcvitty. He lost his life in a tragic car accident a few weeks ago. He was a very talented rider and constantly pushed himself. He rode a Rev Renegade with a color scheme he had picked out that was pretty unique. For the 08/09 season I(and I think a few others) will be sporting the same color scheme to help remember him. My Expert-X will be entirely black, the tunnel and front suspension gunmetal gray, the sidepanels and nose painted candy green and a white 40th edition hood.

sorry to hear about your friend caleb. celebrate his life, remember him, and he'll always be with you.

side note, i ordered the wildchild steering relocator for mine tonight. now i need to decide if i want the clear trail tank, or the black one. if you are going that far with your tunnel. why not buy a cr tunnel???

ski

A CR tunnel is $2,000 for .080 + shipping. Even with all the bracing, metal, and fab work, I'll be in mine for less than $600 and mine will be stronger. I don't care about bling, I just want function and I'm on a budget.

Any chance your sheet metal guy made a template of the new tunnel sides? I'm guessing you'd have to have some new drop brackets to run a stock skid with this tunnel. Are the black tunnel braces custom or a takeoff from another sled?

I'm going in this afternoon but I'll ask them. If they draw it up on CAD they can save it. The Black braces are from a 2004 SnoPro.

Well today was a bust. Do to the time involved to make whole new sides it would have cost $800-$1,000. Not only that, but the piece was over 4 ft. in length and if you go over 4 ft. you have to bend the aluminum with the grain which is a big no no. And seeing as how .080 is $12 a sq/ft. it would have been almost $300 for the material.

I went back to the house and made one more final mock up. I will use the Phazer bumper for strength. And with the new design, I'll only need one 4x4 ft. sheet to both sides. A local shop I've used before can CNC plasma cut it and then I'll bend them myself at friends aviation shop on his hydralic break. I should be able to keep it under $300 now. All the little circles on the cardboard are the layed out holes which will be punched and flared.

So many friggin decisions, I just want to be done, lol.

Just hurry up and finish already! Get that thing to the powder coaters, lol. Lookin good bud, we just got some nytros in today, im excited!

Got motivated again and finished the bumper. I had to grind the braces off so I could bend the bottom tubes straight to match the top(they're offset for the Phazer). After getting everything smooth I used the drill press and drilled 3/16 holes every 3" for mounting them. I figure 3/16 hardware will be enough seeing as how each bumper will have 14 bolts.

Tunnel plans are at the sheetmetal shop. For the locals, I ended up using Greer Tank and they are great. I got entire 4x8 sheet of 5052 for only $131 and only an additional $100 to draw up and cut out six different pieces and bend two of them.

The huge plus is that I got my Doo race shocks and they'll fit with minimal work. They are 18.25" C to C so they'll need to be shortened 3/4". But they use the exact same size bolts as the Nytro shocks and believe it or not, the upper eye is the exact width of the mount on the subframe, it's actually just a hair tight. I only need a couple thick washers for where it mounts to the a-arm(you need .205 worth of spacer). I think this is going to be an awesome option for Nytro owners. You can find the race shocks in good shape for $500-600 and they kick azz. I'm very relieved I don't have to machine anything. It looks like the hardest part will just be mounting the ressis. It's like it was meant to be, lol.

Bought a Trail Tank off the forums today. I had been holding out due to the cost of them up here but I got too good of a deal to pass up. It's going to be extremely nice being able to ride 75-80 hard miles instead of 50-55. Plus no more ugly gas can on the back.

I tore apart the Expert-X today and ordered up new two crosshafts(old were bent from stabbing the track) along with 3 additional ones for extra bracing. In the pic, the rail on the right shows the old swingarm mount and on the left is the beefier one from Excell Motorsports. I think my chassis will fail before the skid ever will.

All my sheetmetal stuff is done which I'll get Wednseday. I ditched the little 1/8" mounting plates from AD Bovin and had some huge 1/8" plates made that will line the entire inside of the tunnel. I finished trimming the tunnel and smoothing everything out for tomorrow. The front of the running board side will sandwich between the tunnel and bottom of the footwell as shown in the pic(where the single cleco is).

I also had some plates cut to cover the holes in the footwell and will have 2 extra sets if anyone is interested. I got tired of snow packing around the secondary and chaincase and it will help strengthen them, mine were pretty disfigured when I removed them.

Picked up everything today. I can't even express how pleased I am. For all the material and labor it was only $202 total. Everything fits perfect, very good feeling. This thing is going to be STRONG.

In order of the pics
1. The stock tunnel all trimmed and ready to go back together
2. all the pieces back from Greer Tank
3. The new tunnel side (.080)
4. another view of the front
5. The old insides Expert-X brace
6. The new .125" plate that covers the whole inside
7. The .080 block off plates for the footholds.

My tunnel is probably going to be 10 lbs heavier than stock but I think bulletproof will be an understatement. Anyway, I should start putting it back together tomorrow night which is going to be a slow and tedious process.

***I have 2 extra sets of block plates for the footholds. If anyone wants a set I will ship them for $20***
