Making up for a 6 sled holeshot is making some horsepower for sure!

What I have experienced with the old 136" Attak vs. 121" Apex is the long track pulls the short track by 6 lengths and stays there. Even if the short track gets out first the long track drives by and the shortie never gains back anything, In every race I have ever been in this has been the case 136" vs. 121".
This would not be the case studded and on lake ice however. That is where the shorter track would prevail. However I run on snow when trail riding and never ice, so for me its long track machines for trail riding.
Perhaps there is a break in difference between the two sleds. Even Yamaha claims the long track XTX runs faster speed than 128". XTX suspension allows track to lift out of the snow, or studs to pull out of the ice prior to the track making the turn back into tunnel at the rear wheels. XTX is a more efficient suspension design because of this.

Agree and would take a long track any day over a 121" unless racing on ice. Funny though all the mod sleds run long tracks anymore to put the power down. 10-15 years ago you didnt see many long track racers...
What about the Artic Cat Turbo EXT and the Apex XTX >>like to see that run>>2 heavy a$$ 4-strokes blowing snow off the trail at 100+mph! should be a close i think?SuperStroker! said:We added a new class to the stock sled shootout this year, a category for the long-track snowmobiles. We had three entries, the new Yamaha Apex XTX, the Ski-Doo Renegade E-TEC 800 and the Yamaha Nytro XTX. But it was Yamaha's new Apex besting the others to take the top ¼-mile honors with an elapsed time of 12.053 seconds at a speed of 98.68 mph. The Ski-Doo was second quickest.
Looks like the XTX is a click slower than the old SRX700...back in 2000.
Fast enough for me!

I have to agree that this does have me wondering too. In my mind I would have figured the XTX to be faster from what I have seen in the past. The Attaks (LTX) on snow were normally faster than the 121 Apexes. The long tracks were geared slightly down too. Good to hear some reports though. This new snow in the midwest should get some information flowing.

Well, I guess I won't post the top speed runs we did today or you guys with the XTX's will be really pissed. After 70mph the 128 checks out. All I will say it's more than 1mph. Last post I make on this.

All these results show me is that, pretty much all the sleds are about the same speed wise. If you plan on buying an 800 class sled then you should evaluate your riding style and make a decision. Because I am not making a 13 thousand dollar choice based on .1 of second in a quarter mile....JMO
One would wonder if the resale will be that close in a couple of years ~ lol

It's just an observation, why get all pissy about it?

It is nice to see real results finally. I was told by reliable sources, includng the Yammie techs at the Novi show, that the XTX was faster on top. Reasoning? the XTX has a better approach angle and better return angle (tipped up rails) to make for a more efficient track. Well, this never sat well with me because in order to get the better return angle, you need to add lots of extra track (and mass) to accomplish it. Unsprung rotating mass is the worst offender for power killers, especially rubber tracks. Rotating mass has to be accelerated twice. Once to get it spinning and once to get it moving horizonally. These are like trying to turn a 40lb flat tire. It has been estimated that every pound of rotating mass is equivalent to seven pounds of convential mass. And this is in the context of wheeled vehicles. A rubber track is way more inefficient to rotate as a rubber tire and at high track speeds we may be suffering way more that 7 to 1. So, adding 12 lbs of track mass is like adding 100 lbs or more of static mass.
I would probably buy the XTX instead of the SE, for all the reasons stated in this thread. But it is not a faster version.

I always heard that one pound of rotating mass equaled a drop in hp or use of hp to carry 4 bls of stationary mass. I always thought the long tracks were best out of the hole, then the shorties could catch up and pass if they had enough "traction" and not spinning...
Anyway I had always heard 1 lb rotating mass to be equal to 4 lbs stationary mass. Does anyone know the exact ratio? Thanks

Look at the FX Nytros. The XTX always puts down more top end 121 vs. 144 and the difference it BIG! Like 10mph!!!
