Hello! Fairly new to the 4 stroke side, I just sold my SRX thinking about getting an Apex or Attak. Anything I should look for in these machines before I buy? Any issues?

Had a '06 Apex GT and now '12 Apex XTX. Motors are bullet proof but suspension and other wear parts still require proper attention to maintenance. Depending on the year, each had their maintenance requirements at certain mile points, such as exhaust donuts. This site has a lot of experience to help you out. Expect to spend a little money on whatever you buy and get a good starting point with the sled. You won't be disappointed.

Welcome ! Your going to love these sleds ! I did when I purchased the Apex! Loved my Srx for many years ,just sold it couple years ago. I don't need a new one , have my Apex dialed in the way I want . Took some time , but that's ok .
All the info you need is up top -- Apex/Attak questions . Lots to read . ! There great sleds !

My brother in law has the Apex and I have the Attak. Prior to my Attak I had a Doo MXZ 800. While it is heavy, I love the 4 stroke. No more 2 stroke smoke smell, linear torque, gas and go, etc. Do I miss the lighter weight chassis, yes. Would I go back...probably not. In my personal opinion, I would go with the Attak. The extra track length and ride comfort is worth it.
Like the comments above, each has their own maintenance schedule and issues. Check the Apex/Attak FAQ. Also, we have really great site sponsors that offer replacement parts, parts upgrades and bolt on upgrades that extend the life of the sled.

I was in a very similar situation that you are. I went to a 2006 Attak this year. Things that I ended up doing to my stock machine to get the ride/reliability I expect from yamaha. Mind you, I am very picky and very religious on doing everything right. I like to know my sleds are in the best condition possible.
-Front bushings were shot...installed olites
-Track idlers wheels were stock...installed brp wheels with 2 hole mounts to cure track/hyfax issues.
-Fuel pump...had to replace b/c it was backfiring and down on speed. Not common. Many recommend a filter change.
-Clutches...rebuilt both clutches. Preventative maintenance. At least change springs and clean.
-Handwarmers not hot...installed yamaheaters. Work amazing. Good product.
-Battery...bought an optimate 3 charger to keep it charged up so it didnt go bad. Must have a good battery or they run crappy.
-skis...installed 5.7's to keep it tight in the corners. Stock skii's are awful. Other options available.
-sway bar...went with the 13mm bar. love it. Keeps the front from lifting in the corners. 50/50 reviews.
-Ground connectors...many issues with bad ground connectors. Spliced them out. Also dialectic greased all connections.
-Relays- Installed solid state relays to prevent the starting issues.
-Y pipes..had cracks in my so I had to replace.
-Exhaust donuts...these are a common problem. Replaced with copper donuts from Ulmer.
-Muffler...muffler was cracked, installed a nice used muffler from Pete Amato.
-Rear exchanger...added a rear exchanger b/c these sleds overheat..also went with a 50/50 coolant.
-Tunnel protectors...I dont run studs, and the tunnels ice up bad...so I pulled my protectors out. Works for me.
-Drive Bearings...mine were replaced before I bought it, but at 5k you better be installing new bearings.
-Handlebar riser...I didnt like the stock set up, so i modified mine with a rox anti vibe riser...love it.
-Oil change...Had to change old oil obviously. Getting the old filter out is a little bit of a pain if you have never done it before.
-Spark plugs...I changed mine, it is recommended to put fresh plugs in.
-Tested T.P.S. - These are very common to go out. Test with a gauge to make sure you're in spec.
-Airbox...Make sure your boots are in good shape. Mine were loose so i replaced with a fresh set up.

He probably ran away after all that lol. its not as bad as it sounds and any good used sled will have most all the updates done already spend some time reading on here and either find one that they have been done on or use them as ammo for a better price nothing a decent wrench cant do on thease sleds.

If you can, get a 2011 or newer. i also came form an SRX back in 2012. you won't believe the power steering and the mid range torque on these and some of the issues where addressed.

I have been there too except I never sold my 2002 heavily upgraded SRX...I don't usually sell anything I like and still have my Vmax4, SXs and 440 SRX still as well!
I went to a low mileage Attak and did some upgrades although they were not really necessary. The Apexs are GREAT sleds and get better as the model years are newer.
For trail riding I ride the Attak...for pure fun and sound I play on my SRX.

I found a very nice 06 Attak 8800 miles very well maitained, has Hauck pipes and fuel controller, the sled is spotless, polished tunnel, they say Monster edition has Monster stickers on it, did Yamaha make one like that? Price is $3250 should I worry about the miles or no? Everything in front end has been replaced, clutches rebuilt, only this it has stress cracks in rear skid.

- 2016 RS Vector XTX 1.25 Lug wifes..2013 RS Vector LTX.. 2003 600 VMax Past Machines 3-2007 Attaks 1-2010 Vector LTX.. sorry no Stinkdoos or poo's cats.
The miles aren't an issue if some of the things above were done....I have had 2 2007 Attaks and have not had half of those issues above..in 10k on one and 7k now on the other one I bought used with only 800 miles on it.I found a very nice 06 Attak 8800 miles very well maitained, has Hauck pipes and fuel controller, the sled is spotless, polished tunnel, they say Monster edition has Monster stickers on it, did Yamaha make one like that? I am leary of modded machines.. I looked for a while and got one from Original owners..and the other one bought new..sold it with 10k on the clock. Still ran fine but had done some of the other issues as mileage increased...
The drive bearings if greased last and I never had to change them in 10k. I also had Pilot skis and hated them. I put Woody's original duallys on the OEM's and they are great..love them.

Agreed! Love the new Apex but having a hard time letting go of the SRX. There's just nothing else quite like it! Don't worry about the mileage as long as all of the common stuff looks good.
