Soupy's belts

you like that eh mike? ;)

Yep, nothing better than a positive displacement (air movement from a fan) rather than trying to rely on a vent and ground speed to move air. Did it with my Doo 1200 this way, but opposite on what I'm planning on with the Sidewinder. On the Doo, because the panels were exposed better up front. I added huge Frogskinz up on the front panels and used the fan to draw that cool air past the belt and clutches. On that I used a 4" fan. On the winder I have room for about a 7.5" fan on the side panel, but thinking about using it to draw cool air in blowing it towards the exhaust side right past the clutches and belt and adding exhaust vents on the back panels, like the guys did on the 1100 turbo in the past.

Worked real well on the 1200 Doo and the 1100. Should work nice on the Winder as well I would imagine. The Apex is very lucky to get some real nice hi-flow cool air into the side panels with proper vents strategically placed, I was hoping the vents up front of the Winder would be enough, but I don't think they are with the CAI drawing a huge amount of air when the turbo is spooling hard.

IMO the CAI under the hood is robbing just too much air for the engine that could be going to the clutches also. I want to put the CAI filter back out of the hood where I had it to help get that cool air back into the intake tract as well, but will need a tune change with more fuel to prevent from going way too lean. The bit of testing I've done with under hood thermometer showed me that its just hot the air going into the CAI and the air around the clutches. Only way they stay cool now is if your just going easy up at 80MPH and keeping it under 100MPH and staying off the loud flipper. When using the flipper a lot, stuff gets real hot, real fast on the bigger tunes! So between heat and rough ground it gets rough for the belt life.

Anything we can do to cool the belt and clutches down is going to pay dividends and I think Soupy has shown us this with his findings on his extreme belt blower. Thanks Soupy, sorry you had to kill so many belts to get it there!

with all the hoopla on offset...Ive been touting the venting and fan since the first account of a blown belt...

with heat mitigation ...I never blew a belt on the procross turbo and found it to be the only fool proof solution....well that and a longer belt on some...

Ive been on soupy and a few other belt blowere for a while....keep it cool..venting in and most importantly out....gear down not up.....glad he finally is achieving success...

Lets see your venting pictures.

I haven't had a belt blowing problem... For sure it makes me sick to know others have... It's claimed that cat now doesn't have a belt blowing problem... The obvious take aways there is a dedicated belt for a turbo sled... And lower gearing...

If it helps it help, why not do it if its going to allow everything to run even cooler.

Good point Tom... Actually with the 12-15 cats they came with accessory vented side panels... I've been watching and hoping for ours too... But probably off season at a minimum mo flow vent at where it would hit primary with venting in the belt guard to let it in.... And one upper side and one side back by knee area.... Double the exit compared to entry .. I like my knee pads so that's a complication... Somehow moving the intake/airbox would be huge also...

Speedwerx has vents for clutch area, front, goes on side covers.

Hauck vent works very well. My clutches are drastically cooler using this. Has a frog skin behind the vent for snow dust. Very nice piece.

The cowl already has a vent at the rear, so only makes sense to have one in the front for air flow.

I have another round plug style for the front of the side cover that I haven't yet installed, should clean it up a bit.

Nice work soup.. Cutting up the belt guard looks like a bit of puzzle...

Been running this vent in this spot since 2012 on procross chassis. Frog skin vent. It's easy and clean look. No brainer.
