Thanks. I am very thankful for all this tips and tricks. It might do a big difference when working on the problem. I've asked the seller for shipping here. Norway isn't part of the european union, so not all companies will.
Do I get to the starter from underneath, and does it come out that way? Mine probably have hit a stump hard at some time, as the wall between the engine compartment and the track is bent backwards. Maybe it will come in handy for this job?
Shuld I undo the exhaust for this job? I've just got new sealing rings and clamps for the exhaust, as I was adviced to change them at this high milage.

I usually disconnect the exhaust and pull all the motor mounts. Some get away with just pulling the front mounts and not disconnecting the exhaust. If the exchanger is bent it should help dropping it down through the bottom.

you should avoid the aftermarket relay. Trust me.

Who did you get the aftermarket relay from. I usually replace it with OEM but did get an aftermarket from DB Electrical for one replacement and as far as I know it's been working OK.

The Rick starter motor was ordered from Italy today. I keep my fingers crossed for fast shipping.

I'm not sure who makes DB's relays and starters but it wouldn't surprise me if they came from China. The problem here is that Yamaha starters and starter relays have there problems too. It would be nice if Yamaha updated their starters so at least the magnets wouldn't fall out. Doesn't seem like a difficult fix for a large motor company.

Maybe the falling magnets were limited to a certain batch, just like the falling bolts, because I haven't seen this at all, even in my original 14k km starter.
For the relay, I had the CCC relay when I burnt my original starter. Then, when I replaced the starter, I replaced it with another CCC relay and added an LED to tell me if the relay sticks. I don't know how but I burned that one too. Then, I put in my third starter, installed an old original Yamaha relay and added even more LED's on my gauge pod. Although I only had a couple of rides because of the crap weather, no problem but this used starter makes a funny high pitched whine compared to the others.
I learned my lesson on trying cheap parts. The combination of down time and weather killed my season. Now I may try my hand at rebuilding/rewinding starters after seeing the price of those things. $472CAD for a new Yamaha starter is just plain gouging.
CCC=Cheap Chinese Crap.

Send some over . I was quoted equally CAD990$ (not kidding) for a new original one.

Rick's Motorsport Electrics is a New Hampshire based company that manufactures and rebuilds starters and stators. So far I have not had a problem with their starters and they do ship internationally. Their starters run $130 (USD) plus shipping so for much less than an OEM you can get one shipped to most anywhere.
With all the starter failures I've seen this year I don't think I'd put much faith in an overpriced OEM.

I did check them them out during my search and no Phazer starters to be found. Only found SPI knockoffs on fleabay.

I don't think there's a big enough market for aftermarket Phazer starters but If you sent them an old one I'm sure they could rebuild it.

Almost seems worthwhile buying a back up starter to have on the shelf if hes selling them for 130$. I'd like to find out who decides the prices for yamaha's OEM parts and write them a filthy email. These sleds don't seem to break often, but when they do holy crap are the parts expensive lol.

I paid the italians extra for express shipping. Still, it took them 6 full days do dispatc it. It has been on its way two days now, and is still in Italy.
Interresting to see if I get it by easter.. I want to go back to the cabin with my 8year old.
