Thanks Cannondale, the clutch is at the dealer now. They are going to send some pictures to Yamaha.
They are good to me so I am hopeful for some help from Yamaha here. 500km's in not acceptable.
If they can't help I will end up with a used vector clutch.
On a positive note sled was running great, had it taking corners like it was on rails

BombaPolaYama said:Oh man I feel for ya that is really bad luck. So in your case it can't be blamed on using an old clip.yamahas said:
Can't believe my luck. Happened again.
Nope new clip both times, can't even blame it on bad bushings in the secondary, completely new clutch all around.

Hi, Sorry your having problems, Do you know the snap ring can be installed backwards can cause this issue. The snap ring has a flat edge and a rounded edge. The flat edge should be towards the outer edge of the spline. I hope this helps youand doesn't confuse you. Bill

I have a new clutch ready to drop it off to get it machined.
I am just having a bit of a hard time understanding what need to be cut?
When I slide it onto the shaft it wont go all the way in. I am thinking I am getting stuck on the end of the slpine on my jackshaft?
Do I get them to bore out the actual spline on the clutch or am I missing something here?

You have to cut some of the splines off the inside of the secondary[fixed sheave] because they are longer. Probably because of higher horse power machines.

Well I just got a call back from the place doing the machining, they say they can't cut because its hardened steel...

I did my own and a standard cemented carbide tool works just fine. You can also use a small boring bar with carbide insert. Any reputable machine shop with a certified machinist should be able to perform this opperation.
I agree.Find a better shop or as last resort a diegrinder.Remember you are only cutting the splines off that prevent it from sliding all the way on tight against the jackshaft bearing its not a critical cut.

ive had my stock secondary apart probly 5 or 6 times, each time with a new clip. i put in a new secondary half because it wasnt shifting because the bushings were so messed up. put it all together n re used the old clip because no dealer around me had one and it was a 2 week wait, with a 400km weekend the next day. i made it through the first day with 200 km, shifted awesome, it was a totally different sled. next day did 160km, almost home, when all i smelt was heat, its a weird smell, but the smell of heat is the only way to explain it. took the side cover off and the belt was sitting on the verry bottom of the clutch. i had to litterally push the sled to make it move once moving it would hold 40-50 km/h, limped it to the skidoo dealership infront of their loading ramp (thank god on a sunday) walked over to the restaurant and had an awesome meal all by myself, while mom and dad went home and got the truck. i dont know what makes theses clips pop, but when they do, your screwed haha. i bought a used secondary from a 1997 vmaxx 700for 250 dollars, it was completely rebuilt before being put up on the shelf, new bushings and new sliders and a brand new shiny 45 degree helix. it also had a new green spring. i took the clutch apart so it could be put in a lathe, and in 5 minutes of explaining what i needed done, he understood and did it perfectly, he had no problems at all, and had it done in about 20 minutes after chucking it up, squaring it, and machining them out, he was done. best of all, he does alot of work for the guy i work for, so he did it for free. he even strongly refused my 40 dollars. but alot of people around here are like that. i pm'd upbushman and he recomended green spring, and 41 degree helix, wrapped to 3 and 3. bought a new yamaha 41 degree helix for 160 dollars, set it on 3 and 3 with the green spring. sled now cruises easily across the field in deep snow, it doesnt pull the engine down as much, and after slamming on brake in emergency corners and getting back on throttle there is no big "clank" same with the engine braking, when your down to 15-20km/h and the clutches release and you free wheel, once back on throttle there is no "clank" if you have a phazer, this is a must.

I did find another shop and dropped it off on my way to a ride. He called me and I'll be picking it up on my way home today and give it a try.
