I installed a clear trail tank on the Nytro at the start of this winter, and as expected, I'm very happy with it overall. Riding on groomed trails, even riding at a good hard pace, the usable range with a Trail tank should be 200kms, as I've done 160kms and still had close to 10 liters in the tank. I know how much was left because when I purchased the tank I put in 10 liters and marked the level on teh tank.

10 liters is also about the level where the warning light comes on, so that's a good safe reserve to have I think.

I don't even really mind the screws for mounting the panels, though I do wish they had a better system for keeping the screws in the panels when you're removing them.

The only real negative is the issue of overflow when filling. Just about everytime I fill the tank, if I try to get it really full, it pour out the vent lines. I fill it up, all seems good, go inside to pay, and when I come back out there's a stream of gas pouring out of the bottom of the sled, spilling on the ground. Luckily all you have to do is start riding and it stops.

One other thing, and it might be my imagination, but it seems like the sled is running hotter this year. Our conditions are getting hard packed now, and often running a groomed trail will lead to the light coming on. In the past I've only really seen the light when conditions were icy. I wonder if the extra space the tank takes up has reduced the airflow through the rad?
 
Whenever riding in cold weather, I find that I get ice build up on front exchangers which starts building up on stud protectors. When warmer out, it seems to break off loose easier. I've learned to just live with the light on when it's cold where it's not actually overheating, just running hotter then normal. I don't think their is a relation to the trail tank.
I also have the overflow problem so I don't fill it right up unless I'm off on trip right away. I think that was the purpose of having the white tube in the stock tank, which wouldn't allow to be filled up past vent tube.

Reroute and levate the bend in the vent line to minimize spilling of fuel.
 
X2 on rerouting the vent lines. Get the vent line as high as possible.

Overheating due to the lack of airflow is quite plausible. I would look into adding the roest dash vent, or even better, add the MTX tunnel heat exchanger.
 
The radiator fan blades run close to the Trailtank. Mine actual hit so I shimmed the top of radiator forward away from the tank with a couple washers. adding the IP vent should take care of any air flow concerns when adding a Trailtank. I installed snap fasteners to replace the thumb screws which make dealing with removing the hood much easier: http://www.ty4stroke.com/viewtopic.php?t=90341 . I'm now testing another fastener system which so far looks promising. I'll take some pictures and get them posted.

That's an awesome idea.
 
My intent is to not hijack this post but i have a wierd concern about the gauge/dash vent. Would'nt the cold air that has just passed through the radiator vent also? I know that after passing through the rad, the air is heated. Has anyone, who has a temp gauge installed and a dash vent installed, seen the temps of the motor decrease? I will be installing 2 in-line coolers and possibly the OFT vent with gauge relocation this off season. Your imput is greatly appreciated. I apologize if I hi-jacked your thread.

NFLD-NYTRO, I have thought about the clear tank did you get any yellowing or is the tank still clear? Anybody else have a clear tank longer with any yellowing? Thanks

I haven't yet, but my tank is under my tank bag, and only really visible if I lift the side flap of the bag.

I am the inventor/maker of the IP Vent and supply them to OFT as well. Heat rises and the vent lets alot of hot air out. The stock fuel tank does not allow for proper airflow through the rad....trail tank is even worse. Yamaha has been putting rads in sleds ever since they fuel injected them and in the Nytro they put it in a crappy spot. Mine has been deleted in favor of more tunnel cooling. Never had any negative feedback in regards to IP Vents.

I like the idea of the rad delete with an extra cooler in the back. Not having a heat exchanger at the back of the skid guarantees that the Nytro is going to have cooling issues. Putting on rad on the sled should eliminate the risk of over heating in low snow conditions, otherwise what's the point of it?

I think you maybe onto something.. Taking weight away with rad. delete on top of motor and adding a heat exchanger in back of tunnel will reduce ice buildup. That alone would be a significant improvement, not to mention balancing the sled more evenly. I'm all for it, now let's see who can do some R&D and comeup with a nice clean design of rear heat exchanger. Ulmer Racing, OFT? ;)!
