Have a 18 Rtx with only 1000 km. It’s been doing this since day one, but when the engine is cut the turbo makes a very distinctive whine as it spools down (It spins quite freely) When I had the muffler off during first service the turbine spins well with zero resistance.

Managed to catch a post on the sw and 9000 Facebook page of another guy having the same issue.

Being my first turbo, is this normal? Two friends with identical sleds do not have this sound.

Thoughts?

Right now that whine is only noticeable on shut down. On yours you could hear it during idle. I have the same noise as your video.

I managed to send a clip to my dealer and he responded with "don't ride it, and get in here asap" - That does not sound good.

Did you ever learn what was the cause of it?

Sevey, you would probably be interested in lilrez's thread entitled Turbo Rebuild Required, currently near the top of page three, this forum. Sorry, when I was in school we thought links were part of a chain.

Dealer told me not to drive it too and the part is backordered till end of may lol. They said they would call around and find one but never called back.

End of May? That blows. You would think now after three years of building this motor, parts would be available. Feel for ya.

Thanks, missed that one. The comment about oil and coking on bearing - not sure about that. The bearing is spinning quite free on spool down. In fact mine spins longer than a friends winder but carries this distinctive sound. Anyway, mine had a this whine since day 1 and has slowly grown louder which made me concerned. Initially it sounded kind of cool, but it wasn't till others noticed it and commented.

If this thing is gonna be down the rest of the winter I am gonna loose my mind...… Figured Yamaha had this turbo and motor thing figured out. it was the rest of the sled that worried me. Where's my Nytro when I need it...…..

That's why we have to keep our trusty old Pure Yamahas around for backup after we purchase our Yamacats

I think you would have to both remove your mufflers or air filters to time them. Just because you dont hear his doesn't mean its not still turning. I inspected mine and there was very very little play. No damage to either wheel. The new used one i found is quiet.
All the service providers in US and Canada that i contacted indicated that it was not able to be rebuilt or too small to be rebuilt . J&H Diesel in MS indicated that IHI has no stock on this one either...which aligns with teh feedback from both Yam and Cat.

One of our performance providers hopefully will be working on a solution. I have a feeling we are going to see more of these as mileage ramps up and as we put more pressure on the CHRA with a 2 inch exhaust.

Well you obviously don’t know a lot about turbo failures. It’s the single largest reason for turbo failures.

Nitro!!! Come on, they ride like %##%$$% dart, even Yamaha race team refused to race them. Real dependable!

sevey, are you stock or running a tune?

Sled is stock. Other than personal additions; risers etc.

Spoke to the dealer. They sent a video of spool down to Yamaha this am. Yamaha has instructed the dealer to advise me to 'run it'.
The dealer needs the sled to hook it up to the computer to send diagnostic to Yamaha so I will do that later this week. Dealer will get all documentation from Yamaha in the event there is a future failure. My dealer thinks its a 'replacement for sure' but Yamaha is not jumping at it - likely since the part is on back order.

I am planning to go to Northern PQ next week. Not sure how I feel about this and don't want a sled to go down way up there. Apparently when these things fly apart the engine can ingest fine particles which can ruin it (didn't know that one). Would take a NA sled right now in a heart beat.........
