Turbo whine during shut down.

It’s hard to believe yamaha put a garbage non rebuildable turbo on this engine. Every turbocharger I have ever seen is rebuildable.
For $3k you could buy two Garrett’s at retail with billet wheels and highest technology turbine aerodynamics. I would bet Yamaha buys these turbos from IHI for under $300.
This price gouging is just going off the deep end.

Is this definite that the turbo isn't rebuildable? The reason i am asking is that a few vendors sells a replacement turbo but at the cost they want your old turbo! Why would they want the stock ones if they can't be rebuilt

I agree - this is a crock they didn't have a system that was serviceable. Clutchmaster - your pricing on a Garrett shows how bad we are being 'goosed'.

This being my first turbo, I wish knew more about them. Wouldn't know where to start if you tried another turbine on there: how do you mount it, determine turbine size, waste gate etc.

Update - Sounds like there is an updated # to replace = Cat 3020-386 / Yam 8KJ 14690-00. This is the part #s for the 17-19s as far as i can tell.
Will no more next week.

Marc, are you hearing anything on yours ??? I’m afraid to listen to the video, because I’m heading up to N Maine this weekend, and I don’t want to be worrying about this. My Sled ran fabulous on my last trip, and I’m gonna ride it and not worry about these things. If it breaks...I have an extended 5 year warranty on it ....and it’ll get fixed for free.

No not at all 3000km and running mint!!

Your best defense against NOT smoking turbo bearings is ..... DO NOT shut your engine off right after long pulls or hard riding. Let it idle atleast one minute before turning off the key.
Always run good synthetic oil too.

From a post on FB on this subject ... quote ..
I have a friend with a cat turbo that sounds exactly the same. His dealer told him to ride it and that they have several making that noise. I've heard that before on pulling tractors and it usually is a result the compressor nut being over torqued. We had it happen on those large turbos upon shutdown. Everything would tighten up. Had to key the shaft and pin the wheel to the nut.

Lol...FB more misinformation being spread around. I don’t doubt they are being told to ride them. The sound has nothing to do with an over torqued compressor nut, take apart a turbo so you understand how they operate.
You will only hear that sound on a Ball Bearing turbo, journal bearing turbos never. The bearing race is fluted, that’s the sound your hearing.

Not rebuildable. Vender wants a GOOD turbo for a core when you upgrade to a modstock. They modify intake housing and add bigger intake wheel to turbo. Maybe do something to exhaust side too.
Good luck if you ride one that sounds like that. Have your dealer put that in writing with a guarantee if it comes apart they’ll cover your motor or whatever else is damaged.
On another side note. Cat did not build the turbo or the motor. More turbo problems on the Yamaha motor than Suzuki had. Must be Yamaha dna?

Just to 'clear the air' - this sled has had nothing but full synthetic, lots of idle after a run, and it was whining since day one. It has progressively become louder.
Don't forget - this has all happened in under 1000km - 4 days of riding total.

I can only imagine its going to worsen and then let go - and Yamaha has advised to ride it. Love the dna and the advice.

Yamaha DNA? It’s really a shame the Yamaha DNA pool has been tainted. Now we have too deal with this half breed POS.

Thank God Cat didn’t build the motor too! The sled would be a total disaster!

Lmfao, IHI disposable turbo is not Yamaha!

Just like everything on new vehicles.
FYI keep your older Yamaha as a back up, nothing currently being produced will ever measure up in terms of quality or reliability.

Gimmy some love on this guys.
