Turbo whine during shut down.

Idleing more is better. I have been in the turbo business all my life worked full time from 18 and now I’m 51 I have dealt with just about everyone that has made kits for these machines.

Can you not buy a replacement cartridge for these turbos ?

one would think the cartridges would already be balanced , cant see how you could balance with a clamp and 5 or 6 screw to bolt the housing to the cartridge, but maybe im missing something

IHI doesn't offer a CHRA for this turbo which is not surprising they don't for most of their turbos. New turbos or CHRA come balanced. So the only way to repair is replace. Checking on the new Yamaha number to see the difference.

Does anyone have a pic of the tag of a new one.
yes, see my post above...#47

Yam number was 8KJ-14690-00 and now is 8KJ-14690- 01
Cat number was 3020-386 and now 3021-932

How would you know if someone is more or less, a turbo expert?
I’ve rebuilt around 20 turbos of all makes, journal and Ball Bearing.
I have good knowledge and experience.
Not sure what more you want?
I can tell you with absolute confidence the bearings are gone on that turbo, no doubt.
It will eventually get wheel rub and destroy itself.

excellent

Thank you @lilrez for posting pictures he had posted some pics of his older turbo. If you look at both turbos in the upper right area is a "spec no." which is the same and that's what IHIU goes by. Looks to me that Yamaha had a part number change but their is no difference. Which is not un-common for OEM's to do that.

The new turbo has a very faint whine similar to the old one - with maybe 20 Kms on it. My dealer is not sure what to say . Did we swop out a perfectly good turbo? Why do earlier models make 0 noise and these ones whine

Just looking for benchmarks when the dealer or oem seem uncertain.
Ms

RHF5B should be the same bearing housing, wheel spec might be different tho

@ClutchMaster go ahead and get that one and good luck. Guys these turbine wheels see speeds of over 150K I bet. If #*$&@ is not right you have problems and big ones. Bearing hsg. might be the same could be different threads or not threaded at all. Really need to go off the Spec No.
