Re: confused about grips

ok i am tottally confused with all this back and forth talk about bars. I have an 06 gt and yes the grips are not that hot, what do i do, i dont understand the wiring harness , is this something i purchase and how do i install it :rocks:

you can disregaurd this entire thread and ONLY READ my first post....do exactly what i said and you will have it done.

nothing to understand about harness...except it comes along with your 07 update bars which most people bought for 30....just plug in 06 bars into 07 harness and you're done.

Ill say this one more time..the 06s were wired with 2 HOT wires(redstripe and yell stripe--each grip getting its OWN HOT & ground)...they came out with a wire harness for 07 which ONLY UTYLIZES ONE HOT WIRE(Yell striped)and does NOT USE red stripe...this yellow wire goes to BOTH grips on one side, while other side goes to ground.

When you only use ONE HOT WIRE and ONE GROUND,the power goes into one side of BOTH grips....and other side of both grips is ground....I dont care if this is SERIES or PARALLEL,those are just terms that mean NOTHING....

what does mean something,is the fact that using ONE WIRE(yell) makes them HOTTER!...so,look at the diagram OR buy the harness with 07 bars...and try it...if you get it wrong you will know cause you get a check engine light....i tried plugging them in 10 different ways and didnt hurt anything..there are only 2 ways to hook this up and NOT get a check engine light...the HOT way or the LUKE WARM way....guys,you need to experiment alittle...everyone is so afraid..i did it dozens of ways then voila!...got one with no check engine light and they were hot!..

Ok, one last comment, added Owners Manual diagrams to page 15.
You can disregard this entire thread
^^^^ Especially the post this quote came from ^^^^^^ .........LOL

See my posts on pages 12 & 15 for the information you really need ;)!

It's too late. There are no more update kit's available according to Yamaha. Now, if you want the updated harness, you have to make it yourself. I have had my order in since September with my local Yamaha dealer and he just received a letter from Yama Mama stating they are no longer available. Thanks Yamaha, I give you close to $11,000 and you won't let me buy a $1.50 harness for $30.00. Is this how you treat you most loyal customers? How many Yamaha sleds have I bought from you now? Try seven! Can you say "and my last"? Ta ta!!!!!!!

call customer sevice and tell them exactly how you feel and how many sleds you've bought and how many people you know you'll tell your discontent and you'll have your kit in days like I did!

For those who want to build their own harness...

Can someone tell me where I can find a listing of Yamaha part numbers for the various electrical connectors they use? I have looked in the parts listings online and service manuals with no luck.

In particular I am looking for the connectors used for the heated grips on my Apex...see attached photo...I want to build my own 07 style harness...

Thanks to anyone who can help… ;)!

I would suggest machzed seeing as you have already made the change to test longer and test for draw on high and leave it there to see what happens. If something is going to fry it will while on high for a long time. Telling everyone to make this change without fully testing them is putting a lot sleds at risk instead of just one. Someone is bound to forget they are on high and let it sit for a long time. I would not like to see a lot of sleds going up in flames instead of just one.

Good warning there Sled Dog.

I would like to caution that even if you have rewired and run them at 1-4 bars, you could have problems still down the road.

Stepping these down with the low settings may be asking more of the resistance or voltage step down circuitry than it was designed for.

Is that circuitly in your guage pod or black box in the nose?
Dont know havent looked, but these are expensive items so use caution.

Here is an opportunity for someone to start their own little cottage industry. If you can find a source for the connectors you could build aftermarket harness kits using the diagram posted here. There must be at least 200 riders on here that would buy the kits from you now that Yamaha has dropped the ball. Factor in a nice little profit for yourself and you can be in business. Anyone has access to these connectors?

This thread is 12 pages now and maybe its here already but all that needs to be done is someone take a picture of the actual wiring and get some of those cool connectors posted earlier to jack into the wiring.
!!!!!MAYBE I SHOULD NOT ADD THIS AND PLEASE CORRECT ME IF I AM WRONG OR DELETE!!!!!!!
It sure would be better to have a removable harness but looking at the diagram it seems simple to me that:
1. BR is no longer connected on either side
2. B from the left side of the main harness is connected to the right B side of both grip warmer plugs
3. YR from the right side of the main harness is connected to the left YR of both grip warmer plugs

Here goes....Voila!

I looked in the online micorfiche and can't see any independant part numbers for any connecters although I assume that a dealer would have a supply of them around or available by ordering. You might try local electronic supply house or Auto parts supplier or even a sled salvage house, but they are hard to deal with unless you are at their counter.

ok, here's an idea...
How about adding the 98 (or whatever year) SX700 dial KNOB, which is 8CR-87283-00-00 RESISTOR, VARIABLE??
Stick it inline the Yellow/Red Wire??

Does anyone have a wiring diagram for this sled to see if it is simply 2 wires?? This costs about $35 cdn.

Perhaps someone with this style could check the resitance at wide open full setting? Would it be zero resistance? Hopefully!

Let me add, you need a knob, 8AB-87284-00-00

so i just learned this wont work....a lot more to it apparently...

I just got off the phone with Yamaha customer service and was told that the bar and harness upgrade is no longer available for this season. They will be building more bar's and harness's in the off season for fall '07 delivery. If you have not put your order in, you need to before March 31, '07.

I rode tonight with temps about -10f. I don't have the "mod" done yet, and with my grips on high, my fingers didn't get that cold. What gloves are youguys wearing? I have the Team Yamaha Gauntlet gloves, and have never been cold.
Here's an idea for anybody who is aprehensive of this change:
GET BETTER GLOVES!
I have a bigger problem when it gets that cold keeping my neck warm! I don't even think of my hands much.
Nate

Made the change back to the 06 bars with the 07 harness last night..considerably better just at idle...

thanks Dan

cant deal with the cold..for me it's the hands...never a neck problem...I wear those balaclava's...when it get's bitter cold ..I'll wear the one with the turtle fur around the neck..
