Warning, -16 late build Viper turbo breakdowns, bad rods.

What kind of rods are you talking about ? The Taiwan (swe) rods from mcx? I thought he was still waiting on that?

Who is changing the rods for you? and what do they charge for work only?

Thanks

I don't know who makes them, but they are made in sweden, and McX sels them. My local dealer will change them for me. Havent got a price just fore the work... But the rods are about 350$.

The diffrence between Scandinavia and US is that here in Scandinavia Yamaha doesn't offer an "Yamaha Turbo kit".
And almost every kind of modification is forbidden by our countries regulations, especially adding power, since they are registred with a specific power and weight, and insurance companies base the cost to insure the sleds based on power to weight ratio, not many insurance companies will insure sleds with turbo's since they in practice are illegal.
ILLEGAL?! That is ridiculous! No offense bro, but God Bless America!

Think it's Verdi WHO makes them.
And that's not bad....

I was looking at Yamaha.ca website (thinking of trading for a turbo 2016 model) but it states
"incompatible with all 2016 models"
http://www.yamaha-motor.ca/eshop/de...oryId=26&itemId=5676&items_per_page=12&page=1
Since they are stating this why are people still able to get a turbo for a 2016?

We baught them before the problems became public. They were offered at a discount for early buy sleds. The note you see was just added to the site less than a month ago.

Motordesign is the designer behind the "swedish" rods for MCX, produced i Taiwan thou according to a set standard. Kent Karlsson of Motordesign is also the man behind EVO-heads and other high end motor parts within racing, they definitely know their stuff.

My dealer says that Yamaha is releasing a service bulletin this morning. I was scheduled to pick up my sled at 1 today now he's saying he has to wait until it's released to make sure it's set up right or my warranty may be compromised. So here I sit, loaded up ready to ride this afternoon waiting by the phone. Not sure if this will ever end !!!

I'm not sure how long your season is going to be, but if given the chance to opt out I think that may be a good choice and regroup with a 2017 model ESPECIALLY if there is a change made and if Yamaha/dealer promises to "do right by you" .

I have a hard time giving up or taking no for an answer myself, so I understand your torment.

I guess time will tell when the bulletin is released.

just spoke to yamaha, dealers are reciving the information right now, after yamahas investigation there is nothing wrong with the 2016' engines and the turbo kits will be available asap and back online when you look up accessories for the 2016's he said after one failure from the hurrican turbo and mpi boost controller issues the problem got blown way out
of porportion and they did thurough testing and they will still offer the mpi turbo and warrenty if installed by your licenced dealer

Seeing the pics of the rods side by side, its definitely a material and/or quality assurance issue hands down.
Odds are Yamaha knows the batch#, and knows what sleds they are installed in.
Hopefully its not all them....like what your mamma said, never put all your eggs in one basket (vendor in this case).

I predict recalls for only the factory-sold/installed boosted sleds, as 99% of the NA sleds will never see 150hp, and they'll likely deal with those issues as they come up. The people on this form are less than 1% out there I figure.

Here is a notice from Yamaha received yesterday.

ATTENTION: Yamaha Snowmobile Dealers

DATE: January 22, 2016

SUBJECT: Accessory MPI "All Elevation/Low Elevation" Turbo Kit Advisory

Yamaha Motor Corporation, U.S.A. is advising that the "All Elevation/Low Elevation" Turbo Kit with the Electronic Altitude Boost Controller (EABC) manufactured by MPI (Mountain Performance, Inc.), Yamaha p/n SMA-8JP17-00-TB, should not be used on 2016-model SRViper snowmobiles unless very specific instructions are followed (see below).

MPI has reported issues with this product (i.e., miscalibrated controller units that can result in a serious "overboost" condition). Technicians are to refer to the YDS message posted on January 4, 2016, titled "MPI Alert Regarding Turbo Kit SMA-8JP17-00-TB for SRViper -- Updated" and the MPI technical bulletin titled "TSB-1505-CA – EABC Electronic Altitude Boost Controller Reprogram Campaign."All MPI turbos should be checked as per these instructions and updated as necessary. Failure to do so may result in the faulty boost controller causing serious engine failures.

As per MPI, immediately disconnect (disable) the boost controller if the unit has not been recalibrated. Dealers and customers must be made aware that turbo kits are purposely designed for specific operating

conditions and require very specialized service for proper set-up and long-term durability — regardless of

type. It is highly advised that all turbo installations be performed by a Yamaha dealer with experience in turbo installation and tuning. Failure to set-up units and test/tune properly could cause performance issues and unintended consequential damage. Further, all such installations require the addition of a high-quality boost gauge (not included) as well as precise clutch calibration for proper shift RPM.

Once a known good (or recalibrated) boost controller and boost gauge are installed, the SRViper needs to be re-clutched so it runs in the recommended shift range of 8400~8600 RPM. Maximum boost is not to exceed 5 psi. Following these guidelines for proper set-up are crucial for long-term durability and customer satisfaction.

Thorough set-up and proper checking procedures must be followed when making this high-performance modification. If you are unsure of proper installation, testing, or equipment required, you may request assistance either by contacting an RTA @ 800-879-0078, filing an Online Tech Assistance on YDS (Service>Online Tech Support>New Request), or contacting MPI.

There is a great deal of misinformation about this issue on web boards and in user group communications. Additionally, it has come to our attention that some market areas may be experiencing issues not attributable to MPI Turbo Kits. Yamaha is currently in the process of investigating all reported issues. We will address the causes and will share what we learn with dealers and customers as soon as possible.

Again, we urge you to take the steps provided above without delay. If this situation causes you any inconvenience, we apologize. We also thank you for your understanding. Yamaha is committed to dealer and customer satisfaction. We are providing this additional communication to help ensure the SRViper’s durability and provide trouble-free service.

MPI turbo it and run the dog PI$$ out of it. Makes me wary of the non MPI manufactures due to warranty issues though.
