Water pump failure

Chalk up another one, water pump impeller failure after decent half mile full speed test run! 3500miles so far!

Hello There guys I am new to this forum I actually joined here at 5 am because I wanted to thank you for all the information that you put on here. I am just like all of you I work insanely hard all summer and winter LOL and couldn't wait to go for a ride we have had no snow at my house which is completely depressing but other parts of the world are on fire so I figure they have bigger problems. Trailer to Quebec we were heading for chaboumaou I went across a lake between Louvicourt and Senneterre yes I was doing what you buy a Sidewinder for and let off the gas near shore and BAM 130C instant I mean instant. I thought wholly crap get some fluff and cool her down but no cool down it finally gave a shower of steam and coolant I let it cool down and right back up so currently gonna try to make new friends today and see if I can rent a truck or anything like that. My sled although I love the look like the ride and handling has been somewhat of a lemon my very first ride I went around my house and down the driveway and SD26 alarm comes on turned out the TURBO was seized solid got it fixed under warranty. 2nd ride up in La Sarre had ROV freeze it burst the oil sight line and caught on fire burned my boot and brand new that morning FXR pants we had 3 of us throwing snow to out it out this might be where i went wrong LOL 4th ride water pump is likely I am mechanic for 20 years or more this was our cold hands on side of trail diagnosis I really appreciate reading someone else had it too because I'm sure today the dealer hasn't heard of it and I'm the only one. After fighting HARD and my dealer Parkway in Collingwood rattling them at HQ I got reimbursement for my pants and extra year warranty. I learned from this site all the little things that happen I blew my belt with zero warning last year I had BOP shield there saved the day and later learned better machine about 2mm off secondary. I learned better put guards in to protect them little hoses in tunnel. I learned better get shaft savers and all kinds of things today I learned better get a water pump lol I rented my machine to a rapper named Drake for his music video WAR it's terrible music but I should have had him sign it maybe some young girl would buy it off me First post ever and I thank you all here

They are good guys at Parkway. I got my sled there as well. They got me a new side panel warrantied after I blew a belt on my first ride when stock.

Maybe you have a connection with them so your service is good, if i told you my new engine install in waverunner episode i had with them you wouldnt send your worst enemy there. Its so bad i couldnt make up a fictional story that would be worse. Both winders came from elsewhere because of waverunner episode, just sayin!

Ya, I've know them there for a while and never had an issue. That being said, the way Yamaha corporate treated me with the few issues with my sled, I wont buy a new Yamaha anything. I was going to pull the trigger on a GP1800, but picked up a low hour FZR instead. I'm looking for a low mile 129 sidewinder to replace my current one for next season.

So question on these impellers as it will leave a guy stranded. Why are they failing? Is the nut not tight enough, design flaw, weak plastic or what?

Every time I let off now I wonder if my impeller is going to spin and engine is going to overheat. Who is going to be first to come up with a billet piece and sell it?

are Any of these failures associated with the sled running hot in previous episodes? ( for what ever reason, poor trail conditions, road running, excessive over boost ect). A plastic impeller will last a life time in perfect conditions but it certainly won’t withstand the thermal dynamics that alloy can in extreme conditions. Just a thought...

Honestly, plastic impeller on a metal shaft for hot coolant is not the way these should be. If anything, there should be a hole thru the shaft and impeller with a cotter-key. Mine slipped on the shaft and went up against the casting. I asphalt race my sled, but never got it over 200F

Hope there is an aluminum that will be available.

Hopefully Travis is listing, we would like a billet aluminum impeller

My sled has 9600km on it and after Reading this thread has me concerned. Is this water pump impeller something that should be changed for preventative maintenance? I have a 2800km snowmobile trip coming up in a couple weeks and really don’t want to run into any issues

What year sled was that?

I sent Travis an email directly he knows for sure but I think he is crazy busy right now but who ever builds one first is going to get guaranteed sales LOL

There is a pin through shaft and molded around the plastic it all broke away

So what’s a preventative fix for this? Does anybody out there make a higher performance water pump for our Sidewinder machines/this 998 Turbo engine?

No one has anything yet but hopefully soon I don't think it's super common after mine went I would upgrade if it was available
