I agree, saving a few bucks doesn't make sense to me, especially if it came down to a blown engine.
 
Wow... So many misconceptions in the use of the extended mileage filter for short use, low mileage oil changes.
 
On the upside the XP flows well with cold oil.......

So what makes you think the genuine Yamaha filter is any better than aftermarket brands?
I realize if there is a warranty claim, having a Yamaha filter may help the claim process. For those of us way past warranty, I want the very best filtration available. I've looked and looked and never have been able to find specs for Yamaha or Cat oil filters. They won't publish them. Obviously neither Yamaha nor Cat make oil filters so whose are they? IDK. I choose to go with a brand I trust. And one I can actually see specs on, and see actual test data.

oh no when i purchased my sled dealer told me about the yamahalube warranty program an my brother in law got a new engine last year under it for his viper while all you guys are trying to save a $ are 2 on oil an filters on 20k sleds.
 
I thought I took responsibility for fixing my own motor the minute I tuned it?

There's valid reasons guys choose to use a filter that isn't sold by Yamaha or Cat.
Some are:
1. Availability- many live hours drives from a dealer. They can get an aftermarket one with verifiable performance specs 5 min from their garage.
2. Just because Yamaha has this warranty program doesn't mean their filter is better or what's best. It means it will work for this application. Again, Yamaha doesn't make oil filters so when you buy one it was made by some other manufacturer. It could be Purolator or Wix or K&N or Fram or any of a dozen more.
3. I choose to use Wix because I trust them, and I can read the specs for myself. You cannot look up specs for a Cat or Yamaha filter. It is certainly NOT because I'm trying to save a couple $. I wouldn't care if they are the most expensive option. I'm protecting a $6000 engine with a $10 filter. My investment is $10 per year! I wouldn't care if it was $50.
4. Again, no one has any idea what the specs are for a Yamaha filter. Yamaha contracted with the lowest bidder!

I never said it was better, or worse. I stated it is what is accepted by Yamaha as approved. When it comes down to a warranty claim, in my experience, I try not to give the manufacturer any reason to say no. Not saying Yamaha would deny for your favorite brand filter, but a Yamaha filter eliminates the question.

1 - Very few live hours away from a dealer. Even so, you can order anything online.
2 - It's not that it "works for this application" , your WIX falls into that category. Yamaha filters are "approved for this application".
3 - I have no issues with WIX filter, I've spun hundreds on over the years.
4 - Yamaha wrote a spec for their filters. Whoever makes them met the spec with the best price. Calling it "lowest bidder" is not the same.
 
My nearest dealer charges over $100 now for the Yamaha oil change kit that has four quarts of oil, oil filter, funnel and drain plug seal washer.. which if you look at with common sense they ( manufacturer and dealer) have it marked up a minimum of 100 percent… I believe this is the reason some go a different route and quite frankly I don’t blame them… Hundreds of millions of different types of motors out there running on all types of different oils and filters..
