yamacharger impellar cover

well to all i have installed 16 in my shop tuned every one set up on heelclickers super tips dalton etcbest top speed on ice set up for speed has been 133 mph on a long pull have held them wide open for 12 plus miles no issues a little oil out of the crank case normal for long pulls i have been paying close attention to this post and yes i have raced many tuned up apex.s mine included air box exhaust pc 3 ignition controllers etc no contest start to finish its all in the set up
 

Just did some quick tests on my yamacharged 2011 xtx.
before yamacharger
1000' test track
103 mph speedo 101 mph gps.

after yamacharger
108 mph on test track speedo = 105.7 mph gps.
 
Had a look at my impellar cover a couple weeks ago. OK. Been riding in alot colder weather the last 2 weeks. Checked just before the weekend. Found 7 of the tabs (from the top middle one and 3 on each side of it) to be cracked on the side closest to the impellar. Called G Force. They admitted to some of the impellar covers coming thru the extursion much too thin. They suggested that I cut them out completely and test to make sure the outerwear did not get sucked thru the now enlarged opening. I put the sled on a stand and give her....seemed OK but secured the outerwear with cable ties over the outside lip of the housing to make sure. They are purolating me out a new cover. The tabs were really hard to cut and not brittle when I cut them out but I imagine cold temperatures are really amplified when air is sucked in to charger.
Just a caution to you guys to double check...if you have the tabs that are about the same thickness as the tabs on the inside of the cover you should be OK. Other than that beware and get the new cover...not pretty if these things break off and get sucked in as you have read earlier in these posts.
 
Had mine off last night completely....oh, did I mention you need to remove it to get the chaincase cover off??!??!?!!

All the tabs looked good so far. I washed the Outerwear....kinda oily it was.
 
I haven't had a chance to discuss this with G-Force yet as Danny is gone on vacation, but I believe there is one major thing possibly happening with the cracking of some impellar covers.

1. We need to be putting some sort of foam tape or some silicone, etc to seal the bottom cover plate to the bottom panels when it is installed for the Yamcharger.

2. A prefilter material over the vent in the side panel to keep snow from coming in the top as well.

3. Mark out the area of the foam in the side panel where the Yamcharger sits and remove the foam from the panel itself to creat more clearance.

If you ride in fresh snow or a lot of snow dust the ice/snow build up around the area of the Yamcharger can get to be quite a bit and actually push on the impellar housing itself, which could cause it to crack. The snow coming into that area and the heat produced by the impellar can cause the snow to turn to ice and cause quite a build up.

The pictures below are from 50 miles of riding in a combination of both packed down snow and loose, busting your own trail, type conditions. The area around the "intake" of the Yamcharger housing was completely packed with snow & ice.

Allan this will also draw crank case oil from the motor if your vent hose is left in the impeller housing. I only noticed oil consumtion after trail riding near the rear of a big group in very snow dusty condition's.
 
From SRX's picture it appears that the charger is one of the 1st generation ones. the outside row of vent tabs look to be about half the size of the inside ones. I received my change up from G Force. The outside row is the same thickness as the inside ones. G force did admit to the thin outside row being a mistake.
I agree that a snow inhibitor of some type is needed to help snow intake; although normal riding in snow dust and a little deep stuff has not been an issue. I'm wondering how restrictive any foam etc. would be on air intake?
 
I checked my cover yesterday. There was a bit of ice build up at the bottom of the cover but not a lot. I saw some air gaps around the bottom housing so I used an automotive product called Seam Sealer to caulk everything closed. I will be in powder this weekend so will see what happens.

The impellar housing in those pictures is one that was purchased this fall. I am still waiting to receive updated impellar housings from G-Force currently.
 
I rode 200 miles this weekend with sealed off bottom side panel.
Very very minimal snow/ice build up at the bottom of my impellar cover.
 
Yamacharger works

i have posted previously and the truth is like every mod and every race the tuning ability and conditions play a major role in the end result. I rode with a turbo for two seasons on an rtx then a season with exhaust air box pc3 ignition plugs and clutching gearing now I have a yamacharger on this sled, the difference is worth the investment. I guarantee that any non boosted apex with a 1.75 track will not beat my sled in a real race. My sled ran 133.6 on radar ice conditions only geared 24 38 at the time no reverse in and a 9814 speed track installed. I have had more fun on this sled beating up on other sleds. When I had the turbo not many would bother racing now it is fun. Everyone is entitled to their opinions that is what makes a forum fun, trust me when I say you will like the YC provided you can clutch and tune. It sucks when you spend money and are still slow, you need to know what you are doing otherwise drive stock and be happy.

and the fact that its my old sled.... ;)!
 
Last year with my ram air and pc3 & im 1.5 intence and some clutching the best I got was 180km speedo (not a top end run) in perfect condections, this year in the same spot with not so good condictions Iam seeing 190km-192km speedo and still pulling with the Yamcharger, had to change from km-mph so I could see what I was getting.
