2-3 hp with plugs

I have tried the plugs my 1st year on asphlat with the 03 RX1, and didn't see any time differences. It started the same and I put the test to rest. This is when they were claiming 10 hpr. a while ago. Never had it on a dyno, but know I didn't see it in the times, so I never dynoed it. It is in the 2003 asphalt results section somewhere, and if I find it I will post it. My .02

My vector dropped slight et's with the plugs on asphalt.

How could this be true??? :tg:

for the apex sleds if you want the solid tip plugs(solid tips are recommended by the yamaha rep) you need the cr10ekb,these solid tip plugs will make sure there is no loss of fire thru the aluminum screw on cap,the "b" at the end represents the solid tip style plug not the screw on cap type, should only be running cr9ek in the 3 cylinder(this is 1 step cooler plug),running a cr10ek is too big a jump according to yamaha rep,im no pro, just repeating what i hear,i have no experience with the 3 cylinders at all,why would you only run 1 step cooler plug in the apex and rx1 and 2 step cooler in the 3 cylinder ?

i just posted about the cr10ekb plugs as being the solid type, ngk doesnt make a cr10ekb,only a cr10ek,i meant to type in cr9ekb,sorry about that guys,if you want the solid type plug you cant get it in the cr10ek

If you don't want to spend as much but still want the boost and a quality plug try the denso version.

http://www.sparkplugs.com/
NGK CR8EK $6.95ea = Denso U24ETR $3.27ea.
NGK CR9EK $6.95ea = Denso U27ETR $2.24ea.
NGK CR10EK $6.95ea = Denso U31ETR $5.78ea.

Can you get the Denso in a solid tip plug?

Spark Plugs

We have 2 Apex's and a Rage and Vector. The Apex's run great as is but the Vector fouls plugs almost everytime we start it after it sits for a time in the trailer. Which plugs are for the Apex and which ones are for the Rage and Vector? NGK CR10EK and NGK CR10EX are referenced but doesn't specify which ones go with which sled.
Thanks,

Guys, tons of info here. And just as many opinions. We have 3 well respected men on this site that have prooved the plugs MAKE MORE POWER ON THE DYNO. After 8 pages or reading here, I see there are still doubters. Im pretty sure Mike Knapp isnt getting kick backs from NGK, rather providing the site with good, accurate and helpful information.

Bottom line. If you want to run them, then DO SO. If you dont want to and dont buy into this, then DONT. End of story. Please let this post come to a conclusion :o| ...BBY

NGK CR10EK work in the Apex, RX-1, and Vector.

Apex, Attak, Mountain Apex, RX-1, Warrior, Mountain RX-1, Vector, Rage, Venture, Mountain Vector

Sled Freak......I got to tell you.......that Avatar of yours is something else! That has got to be the nicest #*$&@ I have ever seen. You and Apex GT.... have a great pair of Avatars!!! ;)!

Well I got 6 miles out of my cr10ek's and then it went to the dealer for an oil change, I drove it on the trailer leaving the dealer, trailered it home, went to start it to get it off the trailer and the plugs were fouled. That was a quick $25! Are these plugs shot when they are fouled???? Not cleanable or anything like that. I am just wondering the specifics of what happens to a plug when it's "fouled" . In all honestly I thought I had the starting of these things pretty figured out as this is my 3rd season on the sled but my 'ol 87 Exciter used less plugs than this 4 stroke. Could it be my carbs need cleaning since I haven't in 2 years???

I hate to say it, but you're probably not turning the choke off fast enough.

You need to turn the choke off as fast as you can, leaving it on just enough to keep the sled from stalling and idling reasonably smoothly (a hint of misfire on the lean side is OK too). If you're using the high idle that gets cranked up when the choke is on to overcome the overly rich fuel mix (with the choke) you will foul plugs.

Basically as soon as it fires, start turning the choke down fairly quickly. Find the point where it wants to die from not enough fuel and keep it just a hair richer than that. You should have the choke off in very little time. Its also OK for the engine to idle slowly when its cold. Don't use the choke to try to keep the rpms up (use it just to keep the engine running). If you always keep the choke on the closer to "off" side of things, the worst that can happen is the engine stalls. Too much choke on the other hand will foul plugs.

I put 19,600 km on my RX-1 and about 6000 of that (mid-life) was with CR10EK plugs. Not once did it foul a single plug at all.

Also I know a guy with about 10,000 km on his 05 RS Vector and I don't believe he has ever fouled a plug either.

As far as cleaning plugs, it can be done. Try cleaning them with a rag and blasting them with compressed air and see if you can get a slightly warm motor to run on them (another method is to heat them carefully with a lighter or propane torch). As long as you don't use the choke too much, its running fairly well on them now, you take it on some long rides right away and they weren't badly carboned up to start with, they eventually should clean themselves up fairly well.

Well I think my problem is I have installed flo commanders on the pilot and main jets and you never need to hit full choke at all. When it first fires it revs like crazy, I back to the choke to 1/2 instantly, slowly decrease the choke until the lights goes out and everything is fine when riding. The problem comes in when you need to fire it up to get it on a trailer and it's not run for more than 20 feet and gets shutoff, sits for an hour or 2 and never gets run at any rpms then you try and re-fire it and the plugs are shot. I tried the lighter trick and compressed air but the motor wasn't warm so maybe I'll warm it up on the stock plugs and try installing the cr10ek after to see if the plugs are truely baked.

You stated you slowly decrease the Choke until the light goes off. You need to start it and then push the Choke to full off, slowly (10 seconds max). That is what is fouling your plugs, you are leaving the Choke on to long. I am on my third season and have not fouled a plug. Just my 2 cents! ;)!
