Another place to stay if you guys are looking for is the swing inn. it is right up the road on RT 12. about 4 or so miles up the road from mapledale. Tams diner is right down the road from it for breakfast and Sheufelts is right up the road for gas too. Just another option. if your gonna be looking for some more night life i would prob say stay in mapledale as there is no direct trail from the swing inn to barneveld, you have to go a ways around.

Have stayed at the Swing Inn last year, or maybe was the year before...again, very modest accomodations, very plain and simple. It is ran by the Hudon's (same people that own the Sled salvage store on Rt 12 in Barneveld. Like you said, the only issue is heading south. To go to the south, you have to ride up to Alder Creek, then back down south, on the west side of Route 12. There are some renegade trails running directly down south from the Swing Inn, but if you dont know them, you dont know them. They are not marked or on any map. When I stayed there, we left from the Bowling Alley every morning, so I just trailered down.....which was a pain in the butt. So wouldnt be my first choice for accomodations.

I hear ya. i work at the machine shop that is half mile up road from the swing inn. i have taken the railroad tracks down to barneveld a time or ten....

Geeez, how did I end up in the barrell? I was just trying to make a friggin suggestion.

GEEZ JUST HAVING SOME FUN WITH YOU STEVEO. IM LUCKY I LIVE JUST SOUTH OF UTICA SO I CAN STOP AT THE BUFFET KING ON MY WAY BACK FROM THE RIDES. I JUST HOPE I CAN GET A DAY OR TWO OFF THIS YEAR TO GON ON ONE OF THE RIDES

I really want to have a TY NY ride out of the southern tier sometime, but it seems like their good snowfalls are few and far between. If we plan the January ride down their, and with a wek to go it looks like there is not good snow conditions, is that enough time to get reservations for people at a place on Tug Hill or mapledale. Even the Mapledale area can still have low snow conditions in mid January some years. Are we better off planning the January ride down by Marathon in January or February? What does everyone think? If we can find a place on Tug Hill that everyone wants to stay at (Freeman, Montague, Riveres egde, or whereever), that would allow you to cacel with a week to go and get your money back, we could plan the January ride out of the Tug hill region and if with a week to go it looks good for the Southern teir, we could cancel the Tug Hill reservations and make them at the Three bear Inn in Marathon. Just an idea.

Sounds like a good plan Gordon. Considering I think we have had to reschedule the ride from Marathon up to Tug Hill the last 2 years due to lack of snow. Maybe we are better off planning the ride out of Tug Hill...then switch it up to the southern tier, IF there is snow, a week or two before.

And we can stay WHEREVER everybody else likes.....lol. I really dont care. I will let the consensus decide.

I'm good with whatever everyone decides. I have no problem leaving the decision to the last minute and going wherever the best riding is.

I'm still bumming that the hunting season got bumped back a week this year and the trails open a week later than usual. I just hope the weather patterns accommodate and start dumping lots of cold air and snow by the middle of December.

Last year would have been perfect riding in my area middle of January. Unfortunately I ended up having to work so the ride moved north. If everyone would feel better, make your reservations for the north and if we can ride the southern tier then you can cancel reservations. With a week notice there should be no problem getting rooms at Three Bear.

I think you just need to let the boss know that you need to go riding. So if a couple planes fall out of the sky cause you didn't get the service done... Oh well. At least your buds got to go riding. :jump:

I'll keep them in the air, I wouldn't let them land. Once when I was working local control at Rochester airport i had a plane doing multiple touch and go's The pilot finally wanted to make a full stop landing, and I told him NO, he could only do a touch and go. Reason was a had another airplane about 1/2 mile behind him and figured if he made a full stop, the first airplane would not be able to get off the runway in time before the second airplane landed. All the other controllers busted my balls for along time saying they never heard a controller ever telling the first plane in a sequence of planes that they could not make a full stop landing. Should be some snow on tug hill this Thanksgiving night through mid day Saturday.

I also heard they are calling for lake effect thursday through saturday on the hill and also for me local which would be the barneveld remsen area!!! I hope so, better get the sled back together!!!!!!

Here is what I was thinking. We plan our mid January ride (13th-16th), for Tug Hill. If there looks like there will be snow for the Southern Tier, a week prior to the 13th, we cancel our reservations on Tug hill and make them for the Three Bear Inn in Marathon and ride down in that area. We can then plan our late February ride out of Mapledale/ Barneveld area, and if the first ride in January is keep on Tug hill, we can switch our Feb ride to the Southern Tier, if they have snow at that time. If they don't have snow in Late Feb. down in the Southern Tier we will keep it out of Mapledale. I hope that all made sense. Now, where do we want to base our Tug HIll January ride out of? Some ideas are The Freeman(Steves new business venture), in Swancotts Mills, Montague Inn in montague, or some of the Hotels by Lowville? Any other suggestions? We should keep in mind that we need to make reservations at a place that will give us a refund of our deposit if we cancel a week before and move to the Marathon area.

Maybe Steve can get us a group discount ;)! Seriously though it doesn't matter to me. Pretty sure you're not going to be able to cancel Montague Inn on a weeks notice.

Thanks for getting the thread going again BBW. It was starting to grow fungus and fall to the bottom on the pile...haha

Sounds like a good plan.

First ride plan in January on Tug Hill, IF conditions are there in southern tier, switch it up to southern tier a few days before. Second ride in end of February out of Mapledale/Barneveld area, OR doing the souther tier IF conditions permit and IF we were not able to do the southern tier for the January ride.

Funny man, Dave-O. You can consider yourself out of the TY group discount!! haha.

Montague Inn has a 2 or 3 day cancellation policy to get you deposit back, at least they did last season and seasons before that. As does the Edge Motel in Turin, 48 hour cancellation policy.

The Edge and the Montague are both $89/night based on double occupancy. Edge offers wireless internet and is in cell phone coverage ( I believe)...and dare I say it, complimentary breakfast. (Dont even go there, Rattler!! lol) You can get cell signal at the Mont (sometimes), but really have to search for it whenever I have been there.

The Edge....(www.theedgehotel.com)
