2012 AK sled build

Add another 7 hours of labor and the subframe looks like this...

I have some more pics I'll upload tomorrow. Subframe weighs 12.41 lbs as pictured and is going to be rediculously strong. We have a few more tubes to change yet before it's finished but it's coming along nicely.

Looks really good !
Its hard to se in the picture but will the steering rods clear those new upright tubes ?

They'll clear, but I will have to run offset tie rods to clear the lower 1-1/4" tubes. I'm going to try and get it bolted on the sled today to look at the engine clearance, plastics, and steering.

More pictures from Monday.

We made new upper a-arm mounts and bolted them to the existing mounts before welding. I didn't get pictures before we cut the fronts off but this pic shows how we did the rear mounts.

My 1-1/4" lower tubes clear the motor which is relief. I did measure multiple times in the beginning but there's always some doubt. Plastics won't be as bad as I was thinking. I will have to make a new hood but I'm use to doing a new one every year anyway haha. Just finishing up taking some measurements and ill start on the last tubes.

I can almost guarantee as soon as this one sees some snow we'll be refining it, building a jig, and building three lighter ones. This was kind of a test run to see if it would even work.

Ha ha. I knew as soon as this was being built that you guys would want to have one for yourselves!!

I can't see how you're gonna squeeze the steering rods in there, but where there's a will ...

Maybe you can move the spindle tabs to the front of the spindles and run the steering column over the top of the front clip, with the tie rods out in front ... if you start going to the gym now and don't hit anything you'll be golden!!! LOL. :moon:

Seriously though, this is really starting to come together nicely. I think you may have some requests for new subframes from people other hyflyer and rlcofmn. ;)!

Hey now, I welded it and I'm sure Drew had a left hand in there somewhere. ;)!

I'm integrating the front engine mounts into the subframe. The 1x1/2 .035 will serve double duty as subframe stiffeners and engine mounts. It will be tied into the lower 1-1/4 tube and upper subframe mount. Dropping the steel s-shaped tubes, steel engine mounting plate, and parts of the die cast frame should result in a pretty good weight loss.

Got my bolt sleeves welded in the 1x1/2" and everything positioned and locked in place. I'm leaving to go to Portland for a few days but when I get back I'll work on tying in the 1x1/2 to the lower 1-1/4" tubes and bracing the top.
