2012 AK sled build

I was considering one of those, but I've seen some mixed reviews about those. Ppl having to fill the pipes with sand etc. to keep the pipe from folding.

I would like to think that Nikolai is crafty enough to makeshift hies own pipe bender.

Youtube is full with tips on this topic.
And here is another page with tips.

I have one just like that, works ok but seems to crush pipe at times on tight bends. Your welcome to borrow and try it out.
PM me.

Got most of one side mocked up with cardboard. I'm just trying to get an idea of what I want before I go to town with the foam.

As of now I think I'm just going to leave the sidepanel exposed as pictured.

Few more pics. The edges of the clutch guard where it covers the primary will eventually have a very large radius so it can't catch on anything.

:-/

I almost wish you didn't.
It will look hideous compared to the other work you have done to the sled. I love the frame, tunnel and the general awesomeness about this sled, and sure, you value low weight over industrial design, but c'mon. :)

The new gen powerhouse sled is a great example where the priority failed, somewhat.
The pro RMK shell on that build was awesome, now it's a disappointment, they really took the easy way out.

Keep on keeping on Nikolai!
Can't wait to see the next step in the build!

I appreciate the honest feedback. I'm hoping once I get the foam done and shaped, it will look quite a bit better than cardboard.

I will say that while garage riding, I already really like being able to place my feet further ahead.

No no no, The polaris plastic on the Powerhouse custom that was the easy way out :)
Probably more man hours in the clutch housing alone than installing 5 sets of polaris plastic.

Any thought of moving oil tank to the front of the engine, that would make a really narrow right side possible.
You probably would have to fab. a new one but it would be really sweet.

I never really thought about building one to go in front of the engine. I looked at building a triangular one that would tuck in close to the chaincase but I just don't have the time for making a custom oil tank. Maybe this summer. It would narrow up the right side quite a bit.

I decided to scrap the cardboard and started duct taping tonight. I should have most of the sled taped tomorrow and ready for foam & bondo. I'm really excited for how it's going to turn out. Not only do my feet have more room, but the fit and finish of all four panels will be much nicer than what I had before and I'll have eliminated the nearly 70 fasteners required to attach all the old body work. Access to any part of the engine/front will be extremely quick.

That will be cool looking, will you have some aluminum inserts around the belt area in case of blowing a belt (or clutch) ?
and how will it be monted to the chassi ? im thinking easy removal in the field for swapping belt.

It will be attached with as few fasteners as possible. I'm hoping no more than 10 for all four pieces. I will add kevlar to the clutch area for added protection.

I finished the majority of the duct taping tonight. Right now, it's about as compact as you can possibly get a nytro. I will have to increase the area around the clutches, and brake rotor slightly for air movement. I bought a gallon of Bondo today and some fiberglass cloth. Once I get the duct taping 100% done I'll wrap everything in a couple layers of fiberglass and then start the final shaping with Bondo.

For now, I'm not going to come all the way down the chaincase, only to beneath the rotor. Still kind of undecided.

Pretty slim from the riders POV.

And here's a few pics of what I like the most and have been wanting to do for a couple years now, increased room to get the boots forward.

Don't be afraid to tell me it's ugly or hideous if that's what you think. You won't hurt my feelings haha.

Dat ducktape.
:)

I LOVE THIS BUILD.
I've been thinking along this path as well. The slim bodykit, although Ive been thinking about using fleece as the foundation for the fiberglass. And a bit more in the paths of aerodynamics, like the engineers at brp claims they did for the XM.

I think the physics/friction of snow drag might be a bit bigger then the mind perceives it to be..

That said, keep on working!
I hope you have a great weekend in front of you!

Outer tube is 3/4 .035, the cross bars are 5/8" .035. I think you could make the cross bars 1/2 .035 if you are around or under 200 lbs. My next ones will either be 1/2" tube or plates cut similar to Power House customs.
