7800mi Service 16 Jackshaft upgrade and Driver/Shaft change 2017 Shaft/Bearing info

I'm lucky I chose the 16 setup without the locking collar system. :letsnow:

Like she said in the last seconds of the film, over tightening and you damage the bearing or reduce lifetime.

That's a great video you posted! Thank You Janne. I am sure some failures were improper install of the locking collar but l think since most failures happened on 14 sleds and almost none on later years the root cause has to be that most of us 14 owners followed the manual and tensioned the chain at finger tight-1/4turn. Manual was wrong but only those that have heard the whine of a tight chain knew it right away. Is great info here but really all years of Vipers the case, bearings and shafts have been very reliable.

Make sure to look at your caliper close. Mine has groves that are wore in about 1/16" on the bottom preventing the pad from sliding. Actually started to wear the pads uneven. Hopefully warranty will cover and glad I caught it. They say brakes are important. :dunno:

So the FAG plastic cage is better than the steel China cage or not??
I won't answer that and I will explain why. I got 8000 mi on stock bearing but only ran my chain tension at 0ld specs for about 100ft. Nothing in my chaincase has ever had any abnormal wear other than the top gear bushing which is a annual replacement. I have no reason to doubt the stock parts other than a few failures on others sleds that I do not know the history of. That said I haven't heard of any failures wit the FAG bearing either. I don't think you can go wrong either way.

cannondale27 You replace the top gear in your chain case yearly? I never took my chain case apart this year after only one year use with 5700 km, just changed the oil.

The cage in the FAG and SKF 2206 bearings are called "solid cage made from glass fiber reinforced polyamide 66"

FAG suffix is TVH and SKF suffix is ETN9

The stock PEER bearing in the 16 setup have no steel cage. I guess it's some polyamide also.

SKF 2206 ETN9 on the right that fit the 16 jackshaft setup. Normal or C3 radial clearance.

How many miles are you taking about? Thanks. Going to take mine apart next year. I have 3500 miles now.
Is a post with pics. Seems to be right around 2-3000mi and you will see the grey babbit is wore off the bushing. Then there is copper. If you wear through that your into steel and shaft will be ruined. More than likely that will never happen because with slop and wobble the gear may not mesh properly when going from forward to reverse or reverse to forward and then if it pops out of gear things can go bad. I pay about $30 for the gear if I remember right. Cheap insurance. Now that I have aftermarket gears I replace just the bushing but its more than the whole stock gear and a pain to change.

Here is the thread with pics of bushing. It has been like that every year.

That top gear bushing I believe is the cause for most of the chain case problems. It is kind of weird system, it seems that a small amount of contact on those small teeth are responsible for the whole system working in forward. The bushing wears and compromises that contact area. It then can pop out of forward gear.
Mine failed at 5600 miles ( chain too tight for %90 of those miles---my bad) I added some Lucas oil conditioner to the oil last time I replaced the gear. I figured it cant hurt. I will check it again when I change tracks this year.
