Hey guys,
Now that most of us have been able to get some miles on, does anyone have results on using the tougher and cleaner 8DN belts?
Looking for strictly aggressive trail riding, racing corner to corner reviews , I'm rarely on a lake racing so not too important to see top end.
I need to buy a couple belts and really leaning towards running the 8DN with great luck in the past on my apex and turbo Viper.
The heat on my clutches has destroyed a couple 8JP belts recently. Going to change a couple clutch items but below is current set up. Belt slipping was definitely a factor in the heat along with milder temperature in weather.
Any reviews or thoughts on clutch heat cause would be appreciated.
Clutches were out of alignment by almost 2mm but that is corrected to the 61.0 spec as recommended.
Currently running,
Primary
- Dalton blk/gn with glide washers
- Dalton DTAY 1 arms, running empty (74 gs)
Secondary
- Dalton 35/37 helix
- Dalton new sidewinder secondary spring wrapped 6-1
- TP heavy duty rollers
22/41 gearing
1.6 ice cobra track (137)
Power trail CAI tune
8JP belt

I'd go back to a 35 helix as that 1.6 Ic makes the driven clutch work very hard .This is where your heat could be coming from .I have a PT in my sled and i'm at 76 gms .Fix the drive and driven .THE harder 8dn will only make more heat if you don't fix your clutching .Hey guys,

How come you have the longer gearing? Should be less heat in the clutching wth stock gearing. Plus I don't think you want to take a 1.6 track much past 120mph.

I put the extra gear in just to see how it would react. Heard mixed reviews about the 22 for trail riding, but I believe you are correct with it causing more heat on clutches. That gear conclusion to heat problem has come up with others I have chatted with also.
I will be removing the 22 gear this weekend to see if that helps.

taller gearing especially with a taller lug track is harder on the belt...when a long track and / or tall lug...stock or lower IMHO and Id use less helix...like the stock 35

I talked to the Camso RND guys yesterday about the 1.6 IC and they say it's 7-8 mph slower up top not because of the lug height ,but because the lugs are soft and cup over at speed .If you want a good fast track get a rip2

8 dn will groove your primary clutches right in middle. Took about 9000mi on Viper to get groove but will have to do something next season for sure. Winder may be better or worse. Remains to be seen.

Not sure what is going on with my clutches either. I installed the Thunder Products Orange Secondary spring which I believe is made by Dalton. My clutches are now super hot and the belt itself is hot. I can't keep my hands on it. Not sure what is the culprit but I am leaning towards the Secondary spring. I have it wrapped 3/3, I had a hard time to rotate it enough to install. Very Stiff. I may go back to the original spring and check the temperature. I run the Gates Carbon 8JP and it is making a lot of dust and I can smell it. I ran this same belt in my Viper with very little temperature or dust. My Sidewinder is not flashed either.

I wouldn't run that spring on stock boost.

I have the orange spring on mine along with 33/35 helix and big venom primary kit. I will agree it makes the clutches run hotter but I think that is because it downshifts much quicker than stock. Between the added downshifting and engine braking there will be more heat. So far I like it and I have 2000 miles on my original belt.

8jp and Gates Carbon will run hotter because it’s soft.

Just to clarify. Dalton does not make the orange spring for Thunder Products. Next are you running the stock helix? On your stock sled you might try going to 3-2 on the wrap. Also what weights are you running?
