while working on a fix or the problem with the brake caliper side bearing and driveshaft we have determined the rotor is being ground down by the bearing race. Measured bearing race against a new and bearings are having little wear while the rotor is loosing over 2 mm in width. The rotor is now also 3 mm larger than the shaft. Might want to pin the rotor. I agree the race is spinning but the rotor is missing metal and acting as sand paper on the shaft as it spins and rattles.

I noticed my brake rotor was also very worn there on the bearing side. Not quite to the point of replacement yet, but wouldn't want it worn down anymore.
Another reason I put an O-ring on the shaft behind the bearing and inboard circlip and set-screwed and loctited the bearing. I don't want that friggen bearing spinning again!
What a poor engineering design this area is on the sled! Wouldn't have cost them anymore to design it properly and make it like a Doo.

Really, well you've never been schooled by a turbo 1200 yet then I take it?

Mike are you telling me if I modified my 08 Apex ( which is 170 cc smaller ), spend 6-8 grand (guessing the price) the 1200 would leave it in the dust ? I don't think so . If the 1200 was that good hurricane & turbo dynamics would be selling the kits & racing them . If u love skidoo that much , why are u riding a Yamaha ? & u should have kept your Apex because it was faster than your 1200 ...
sorry to get off topic...
Unfortunately Yamaha die hard s will have to live with kitty deficiencies until Yamaha fixes them next year

You don't have to spend that much to make a 1200 Doo go. My NA 1200 Doo would take down my neighbors NA modded Apex, and my MCX turbo 1200 is quicker and faster than my Winder still. I'm riding the Winder because I like the ride and handling better is all. Its not that fast, I wanted to try something different.
My 1200's both NA and turboed were FANTASTIC machines and much better built and lighter than the Cat/Winder. I did own one very fast Apex with Simons turbo setup on it, but it was also very heavy.
I try all brands of machines and not afraid to try different things all the time. I'll call a spade a spade all the time. I have a love hate for the Winder right now. I've had to fix and re-engineere a bunch of things on this chassis already, but its coming around. Guy just shouldn't have to do this much to it though to make it last.
IMO Ski-Doo engineering and quality has it all over thees other brands, and If they'd have turboed the 1200 instead of the limp 900, I'd have been on one of those in a heartbeat this season. On the other hand I have no time for there e-tec or two-strokes, would never own one, but that 1200 is/was sweet.

Why does it seem every time I read a post from Knapp there is a huge bias for BRP. You only have to work on one CanAm atv to figure out the there is very little good engineering going on at BRP. I can’t say anything about Cat cause I don’t know them, but all of my Yamaha sleds have been light years ahead of BRP IMO. Why are we comparing non stock sleds. In stock form the Apex is awesome and the engineering is solid so to compete BRP owners must spend money and time to modify their well engineered sleds, ya right! Mike Knapp come to my neck of the woods and bring your absolutely stock 1200 or 850 or turbo 900, and I’ll let my stock Apex xtx with 20k on the belt walk by you.

I love a good cat fight but let's hold the chest thumping for just a second.
Mr Knapp's writings sound grumpy, but he's a blunt honest person. In a grumpy kind of way.
He was a true Blue guy, but had great success with his Doo's. He loves this 'Winder, but let's face it, there are basic things that we are fixing that are driving some of us nuts. Like leaky oil tanks & bearings spinning & holes not drilled so chain case top bearings go bad.
Like the grumpy Knapp says, we are fixing basic engineering issues to make this sled AWSOME.
This bearing that spins causes premature brake rotor failure and driveshaft wear. I will pin mine next year.
In the meantime, i'm trying to teach Mr. Knapp how to come across with a smile on TY. It might be easier to fix this sled's engineering downfalls.
Go team Blue!

Good and bad , I like all honest opinions. We all know the engineering is not as good as a pure Yamaha sled. That being said, I think we are all true blue to Yamaha! Remember to keep the shiny side up! LOL

I have to say that riding with 2 1200 doos for years that the Doo 1200 is a fast. I can beat it on top end but trail riding it is quicker then my Apex XTX. Every time you hit a straight it leaps out and by the end of it you start to reel it in, through the corner and out the the other side you lost what you gained and start over. I love my Apex but in no way do I agree that the 1200 Doo is not a reliable sled. I'm with Knapp if Doo had built a SS 1200 making 150 NA like the aftermarket kit does I would have bought one. I am only glad they did not because I like my EPS way to much! To crap on the Knapp is silly and Doo's 1200 was a good sled no matter what you think of the Can Am.

Please spend some time reading Mr Knapp’s posts and you will see that most are Doo friendly and Yamaha unfriendly. Is this a Doo or Yamaha site??

I didn’t say the 1200 wasn’t good, I say if the engineering was solid a 3 cylinder 1200 non turbo should be in same horsepower if not more than the apex. The 900 is the same it should make any easy 150hp non turbo but they can’t or won’t engineer it. Yamaha engineering is solid
I ride with many Doo and Poo guys and to be honest they believe my XTX is the best handling sled on snow. I can easily stay with them on the corners and they often can’t stay with me. I am not a corner cutter either and rarely use the brake. I can walk away from any stock 1200 from a standing start to top end, same goes for the 850. I’m taking hard packed trail -10c, no chest thumping just experience and fact.
