Took my Viper chaincase apart as I have all my pcs. to switch over to asphalt.

When loosening the screws I heard a click drop down into the belly pan area. When I looked around the case, I saw the bolt hole missing from the cover of the chaincase. It had been broken for sometime as the aluminum does not show a fresh break.

Not to mention that I was going to drain my oil as I have 2,000 miles on that oil since my first oil change, but thought I would leave it in there for the first couple of runs down the track. I called a dealer to ask if the oil tank is separate from the chaincase spacer sandwiched between the chaincase and oil tank. Well, lets just say my sled bellypan is no longer pretty anymore %$#@!

This whole oil tank/chaincase thing is a pain in the #*$&@!

Oh, and that noise I always heard under full throttle is the reverse chain. There is no adjustment for the reverse chain at all.

:dead:

NOS Don't feel bad I know of another guy it happened to, toward the top of the chain case cover he has a crack around one of the bolt holes. It has not leaked at all and he still hasn't had it fixed.

The gears all look good...happy to see that. even the bearings on the secondary shaft are good.

Apex1958 - I remember reading about it happening to someone else here. New part will be here tomorrow so there is a good chance I will have it done for this weekend to make a couple passes

I plan on tearing my sled down this summer to inspect everything. I hope i don't find the same.

When taking the chain case cover off , make sure you loosen up every bolt a 1/2 to 1 turn first then take them all out . If you just start taking the bolt out then you will most likely brake a ear off the cover !

I have heard it is a common problem through the Yamaha dealers.

Good point. The tabs are very thin
