Yes, remove lower plastic panel and you'll see the oil tank drain bolt on the bottom.
Also, get the engine up to temperature first and the oil will drain better.
Lots of good people on this site willing to help!

I would clean your drain pan, then drain the tank, and then drain the engine, (2 different plugs) put plugs back in. measure out 3 quarts and fill the tank. start engine let run for 10 minutes. and then check your level. should take about a 1/2 quart more to be full.

So again. Is not the Allen screw at the bottom of the sled the "engine" drain?? If yes, she drained for over an hour. If no, how do I drain the engine?
Will the screw not drain the oil tank too?? Just trying to clear my mind of getting all the oil replaced. Again it's my first change at 588miles and shards of metal so I am pretty happy the oil filter seemed "clear" too so I think I did it right
Yes the picture shows an over full tank but before I cycled the engine to move the oil around.
2013 Apex SE - Old Forge rider. 05 Vector too
You have to drain the tank as well as the engine, two seperate drain plugs. If you only drained the engine you left two quarts in the tank. Lastly when you checked oil with the dip stick what was the level?
Procedure is drain oil tank, then drain the engine, then change the filter.

I just would like to thank MrSled for this awesome how-to for the oil change.
I just did my first change and it was easy to follow. Not as bad as I thought it was going to be.

Correct. I think the scares come from the ones complaining with old school of though of wanting to change the oil filter every oil change vs the 20,000km Yamaha says.

1) oil tank 2) engine pan 3) then filter change should be the title to this thread. You have to drain the tank as well as the engine, two seperate drain plugs. If you only drained the engine you left two quarts in the tank. Lastly when you checked oil with the dip stick what was the level?

I bought 3 new quarts if 0w30 @9.99 a piece to "rechange the oil". Ugghhh.

My apex didn't get many miles last year, maybe 2-300. Is it safe to just change the oil, run the oil filter another season?

I've always dumped 1 qt of oil directly into the engine using the black plastic fill cap on the top of the head on my warrior and it worked fine. I've not changed the oil yet in my new apex but I assume the black fill plug is still there.

If there's a filler hole on top of the engine I don't see it

This has to be a pretty serious tear down to get in there. I simply used the oil tank and cycled it through and poured in more. If I tried to tear down to get in there I'd go insane. I already plan to kill the maker/engineer of the battery box cage. Insane!!!!

Why it's under the airbox which has to be removed to do a oil change anyway. I mean the headlight.
