Blown Belt

Someone better come out with a fix soon for the belt blowing issues. Talked to two other sidewinder owners today bone stock and they both blew belts under 400 miles. This is soooooo repetitive from the past cats I've owned. Very very dissapointing
Had a customer come in today again. He's at 1500km stock 8JP belt and powertrail with stock modified muffler pretty much from the get go. Races everything in sight and is undefeated.
He has many friends with supped up 1100 turbo running over 250HP and he beats them all.

He does a lot of 0-115mph. I think most of the belt breakage are guys trying to max them out gear wise.

I think the secondary is binding. When I look at mine I only gave one roller touching the helix and after inspecting you can clearly see the one touching has more wear on helix then the other two. That tells me that it's always travelling crooked down its path. Now the big question is why?

Nothing alarming in that pic. Could nitpick that the belt should be riding higher up in primary . The other half is what I want to see! LOL . Check it with a mirror Joe if you get a chance
what do you mean other half

Lets look at the some of the issues and should we make a poll?

When did it break?

Full throttle, big mph?
All the causes may be gearing, clutch offset, secondary coil-binding... Heavy flat weights putting a lot of stress on the belt?

Some that are having good luck now have changed clutching.

Has anyone noticed anything out of spec on their primary clutch? On the Sidewinder page on facebook I noticed one owner claim when looking at the two sheaves of the primary it appeared one face was a bit taller than the other. Like if you put a level across the top of the two sheaves one sat higher.

If that was really true I could see the belt possibly climbing over the top. Just repeating what I saw and only asking.............

What I find strange is certain owners having no belt issues and are very happy while others are having the opposite. I haven't heard any issues about the T-Cat versions blowing belts with the Team clutches.

This sure reminds me of the original VMax 4 days. Not so much about blowing belts back then but just poor backshift and performance resulting in a total redesign of the primary and secondary clutches a few years later.

New here and wanted to chime in. I have an LTX LE 137. Stock 8JP blew at 230 miles. Flats on stock secondary rollers. 3-3 wind was stock. Blew at WOT from a trail crossing, about 40 mph. 144 studs down the center that were installed about 40 miles prior to the belt breaking. 280 lb rider. That day we rode some hardpack and also spent about an hour in 3-4 feet of powder (damn that was fun!). Unfortunately blew a hole in the lower body panel (happy to see these arent outrageously priced) so my dealer is making a claim with Yamaha, considering the low mileage and damage. Everything felt great up until this happened. I can answer any questions y'all might have that would be helpful but just wanted to chime in with any help that I could.

Great site, thanks for all the wonderful info!

Belt break clean in half? or was it frayed to he**..
Any black marks on primary?
And did you handle bar that throttle any BEFORE stud installation? Kind of interesting to me that you blew the belt AFTER stud install.. That's why I ask if you ran it hard before studs. Might mean nothing also

What do you guys think of my primary face. This is after 900 miles. 400 miles after I blew a belt and installed new rollers with 6-1 spring position.

The pic actually looks worse then looking at it in person. The secondary is perfect. I think I'm happy with this.

In pic you can see darker line where belt was riding towards top of primary. Mine too looked like this.....more miles I put darker the line became pronounced. Eventually black snot will start to appear. I think darker line is belt slip at higher speeds. Question I have is why the slip???? Is it binding, low tension, etc???

Very good question. My buddy's sidewinder looks exactly the same.

Here's the belt

Yep. That is spring bind in secondary causing that.

Yes, it's being broken in properly, varying speeds & rpms.
