Cat announces new 858 cc for Catalyst at Haydays

If it’s 50 pounds, that pretty significant. It’s quiet impressive actually. That 858 will feel pretty quick!

It should ride much lighter than the previous versions. It will be more nimble, easier to control with weight bias, and feel snappier even if it had the same power which of course it does not.

If we throw what we know so far into the list that snowtrax published we get the following. The published dry weights are just the stories the manufacturers choose to tell. The snowtrax numbers being real world if you grace them with not totally screwing up weighing the sleds.

In the case of the Catalysts, I used the known weight found for the pre-production 600 and extrapolated the dry weight for the 858 given that it shares basically everything important except the crank/rods (incremental weight) and tuned pipe/exhaust. All just extrapolation but not in a vacuum as the AC statements about 600 weight (10% less than the previous 600) and actual 600 weights as shown earlier in the thread all line up. (forecast 500 dry, actually weighed 500 dry). Even if the difference between the Catalyst 600 and 858 is closer to 20lbs, hell, 25lbs, the 858 is still considerably less than a doo 850. All just good fun of course, we won't know for sure until someone gets their hands on one.

I am excited for Cat. My closest dealer is a Cat dealer and they are excellent. I am hoping to get a test ride on a Catalyst at some point in the near future. I hope they find a way to shoehorn a turbo 4 stroke in.

I’m not sure my wife would appreciate following me around all day if I’m on a 2 stroke.

Good point on 2 smoke , we forget those days following 2 strokes on a trail ride .. especially a rich running 4 jets too big plug fouling new machine set up from factory to save on warranty claims 2 stroke …. Lol yup those were the norm…….

Last season we went on a ride with some friends and the guy who lead most of the day was riding a new 850 Lynx. We couldn’t wait to get in front of him. I could tell every time he pinned it just by the smell.

I don't know how they do it when there are a bunch of them riding altogether. With just two 2-strokes in our group I make sure that at least one of them is behind me, preferably both. Both are newer (2021/22) Doos. Fortunately neither is the type of rider who feels like they have to whack the throttle every few seconds.

I do a large group ride in Manitoba. There is probably 100 sleds or more entered. I come back smelling like two stroke sometimes. My friends Polaris 800 is quiet the smoker on a cold morning. Last winter we all started this ride at -32. Holy SMOKES!!!! lol

Its like a James Bond smokescreen thing for some of the sleds. Even a new Polaris VR1 smokes a lot when it is cold out.

They all smoke. My eyes burn with my 2 winders warming up in the trailer on a cold morning.

Unless you have started a VR1 in your trailer its hard to compare. The VR1 is much worse than the normal modern 2 stroke. if the winder is a 1.5 on the smoke scale of 1-10 where 1 is eye watering but tolerable/understandable given the conditions (forced to run rich) and 10 is a 911 call, the polaris is a chemical warfare 8 and the doo is a 5. Its that big a difference. Once they warm up they just stink.

Ironically, the VR1 uses less oil than the doo per fillup. Not sure how that can be given how much they burn on startup but I have heard that from multiple sources. (all who complain about startup smoke)

Well, I'm already bored with this 858 because I have no desire to ride a two stroke as my main trail sled.
I really hope Cat is working on a triple turbo 4 stroke to fit in here. As much as I love the Yamaha 998, I really don't care if it isn't, as long as it is a triple(or Four), with all the the characteristics of the 998.
I don't want 170 HP having riding 270 HP
