I have many times replaced with sealed bearing, keeps shavings out and I'm sure oil gets in.Axle bearing on chaincase side? That is more rare since that bearing is open and lubed from case. Was it bad due to metal shavings in it or did it spin on shaft?
Good reason to open these cases up seasonally AT MINIMUM. This will go a long way to keeping them clean, checking top gear bushing, shift fork pucks, and chain tensioner roller screws(should be tack welded IMO) and chain tension.

I have 5400 miles on my 17 winder, lower drive shaft brake side inner race bearing chewed drive shaft .060. #*$&@ design. Also pull the top gear with no oil holes and it was about 006 bigger then a new one. Not a lot of slop but enough. Checked the chain tensioner and I was shocked to see the screws still in place on the roller but still tacked them to be safe. Between the drive and the rollover valve and crappy oil tank seal I’m on the fence about getting another Yama Cat. They need to make some small fixes and the sled could be outstanding.
We have almost 2000 on my wife’s winder and her oil case case seal went and I am scarred to pull the drive shaft to see if that’s eaten away.
It really is a shame how these sleds are designed. When I bought my 17 Winder I was extremely excited about it. I hadn't been that excited about a new sled in years. That all changed after all the reported issues and seeing first hand how it was all put together. Had it been engineered with the quality I was used to from Yamaha I would still own my Winder and probably be looking into another one now. It's no surprise Cat is Spring only now and barely hanging on for dear life.

I have had no issues with my 2017 LTX LE , and went to see what my next SW would look like in person , last night .It really is a shame how these sleds are designed. Not sure I am on board with the Jet Stream blue , but I may just keep my current SW as a back up , as I did with my 2015 Apex when I bought my 17 .
The SW is a very good handling sled , and lots of smiles !

I have had a lucky go with my 17 winder I guess. 12,500 kms now all on powertrail except for break in miles. I did tack weld chain tensioner because of the reports on this website though. Axle bearing is showing a bit of wear so maybe set screws in off season, I have also replaced rollers in both clutches with upgraded ones. Bullet proof #*$&@ eating grins the whole time. Currently there is no alternative to the turbo yamacat for sale in the industry. Knapp and Rockerdan well respected technical gurus on here have been kind in their reviews of the 900 ace turd. I find in my predominantly skidoo riding group that the key to thinking 900 ace turbos work right is paying close to $20,000 cdn for one. A particularly wealthy guy in our group did have an interesting take on them. His dealer told him not to buy one but he did anyways. He took it for one ride and declared it to be wife and kids sled that he will never ride again unless his xrs 850 is broken. He might get to do that with the surprising number of 850s crapping out with low miles. My personal take on them is it would be nice with big bags to go across northern Quebec, unless tuning and clutching fixes it a lot it’s out for hilly corner to corner blasting in Ontario. XP123 as far as health of mfrs I can give you micro example from our area. Parkway Yamaha my closest dealer had 3 sleds last week. Rumour is St Onge skidoo has 130 units which is common across province I hear. Doo will be in weird place cat was in where new sleds with warranty are cheaper than used ones on Kijiji. Regardless of personal opinions about our emotion loaded power toys I would never consider going on dootalk and spouting off my opinion of the gutless alternative to our favourite highest performance sleds in the history of the sport.

Well Cat/Yam may be listening, at least to some things....
Just got back from sled show, and I saw one major issue we all had, re-engineered and should be fixed. Now will they make chaincase updates in this same manner too? Not announcing it? Im not so confident but hopeful.

All the hoping I have been doing failed me. Chaincase barfed. stocker with 2000 miles. I hauled it to the dealer last week and they havent been able to look at it yet.(warranty) DO NOT SELL previous sled if you buy one of these. You will regret it.I am hoping all these issues surface at the same time on my sled 2 days before the warranty ends.

Sorry to hear that. This chaincase design keeps me up at night. I was hoping if I left my sled stock it would not be an issue. All the hoping I have been doing failed me. I am not a religious man but I have started praying before every ride. At 4400 miles now with my fingers crossed.

I have 12,200km on my Sidewinder LTX LE and have been lucky so far. I just recently changed all bearing in chaincase and PTO side. Also replaced chaincase main chain and upper and lower gear. I have made sure to change my upper gear every year just as preventative maintenance, I have also tack welded my chain tensioner roller bolts, siliconed the sight glass all in hoping to avoid any issues.

Every chain case no matter the milage should be pulled apart and weld or properly loctite the roller bolts. The top bushing needs to be inspected or replaced every couple thousand miles. Also make sure the sight glass is in properly.Sorry to hear that. This chaincase design keeps me up at night. I was hoping if I left my sled stock it would not be an issue.

Once those are done, the chain case is fine.

Can I please join in your sorrow? 4,200 miles (2017 sled) - brake side bearing failed. I had re-greased this bearing at the start of last season but I got lazy and didn't do it this year cuz it looked good. Had the BOP wedge in it at 37 ft.lbs. Shaft had also spun in bearing but that might have been because the bearing probably locked up. No conclusion on that now.

My bad. Should have re-greased it. I hate being lazy.
