Cooling down the intake temps when warm out - hot!

Wander if anyone has looked into some sort of tunnel exchanger for the charge air? Snow on an exchanger will cool better than air.

Going off topic a bit, but if someone was able to come up with another heat exchanger for the cooling system(and not a rad under the hood), I would be interested in something like that.
Given that plenty of us are adding 30-40% more power, we also need to add more cooling capacity for every aspect, like air intake, under hood temps and cooling system.

Can you mix and match intercoolers with your tune? Example, MCX intercooler with a TD tune. I figured restriction/pressure drop could vary more than a little. Will this work or be risky? Or aftermarket intercooler on a stock tune?

I would think so but that is a question better suited to the tune writers.

I would assume they want to sell their own, and steer you that way. I don’t know enough about the system, maybe it would sense and adjust accordlingly. My concern is that it will not. Like to try my own thing if it would. Some advice would be great if the system would auto compensate for the differences? I doubt it will.

I have tomcat performance 3 inch intercooler which works well and brings down the temp by 20 degrees cooler vs stock side by side comparison with other sled , the only problem with the 3inch intercooler u need to trim plastic and the bumper to fit proper ,

Good to know and thanks for sharing. Could a guy mount a fan behind it to help with cooling. Like an electric fan on a radiator.
 
It will work only when going slow, when going fast your pushing more air and the fan is a restriction,
 
Noticed one thing this season with all the snow we received in Feb running plenty of deep and powder snow. The intake temps ran much cooler with snow packing into, around and behind the intercooler. Many times I'd come home with the sled looking like a packed snowball and ice cube.

I'd have to turn the heat up in the garage to melt if off for the next days ride. Many times I'd have the steering icing up by the end of the day etc. I'd have no Idea if a guy was backpacking or letting it sit outside over night how you'd even ride the next day. It'd be a frozen mess.

The intercooler actually works better in the deep snow than it does being completely open and free of snow, unless its real cold out like mid single digits F running bigger tunes.

The bigger and more aggressive the tunes, the hotter they run and the more power they loose when they get hot. On 240R tune it seems very happy all the time, move up from there and not so much, hotter on intake temps, also harder on clutch parts and belts. They are after all designed to run at stock 205 HP, so above that you get heat soaked and reduced reliability and all the other things that go along with it. The stock turbo is very small and beating and heating the crap out the air when trying to run bigger boost.
 
Bigger turbo would cool things down and make more power for sure, but what good is it if you can't put the added power to the ground with the Cat chaincase, clutches and belts we have now.

Have you tried to run a real 290 and 300 HP on the trail yet on the 998? Parts strain to live as it is. I was finally able to get 1700 miles from one single set of rollers this season however and not blow any belts, I did cord three 8DN's by no belt explosions. 240 still runs along happily and does not overheat the intercooler. I have to quit trying to trail ride the larger tunes and just clutch for the 240 all the time and quit worrying about the next thing to break or overheating the intake. These things will suck your bank account dry if you keep pouring the coals to it on the big tunes.

Sure was easy to make turbo power with the 1200 Doo's and Apex's without all the worries we have with these Cats and its poorly engineered and undersized systems.

Mike if I remember correctly , you removed your cold air intake and returned to the stock air intake. After doing that for a bit , do you still believe the stock air box is better at supplying cool air to the turbo?

Stock box without a doubt supplies colder air to the turbo and the clutches.

I have since added a boat load of vents to the front and rear of sled where I can cool the clutches better and gone back to the WAI that pulls more boost with the bigger tunes, even though it runs hotter. I still like the stock box better for cooler intake temps and the lower boost 240 tune.

I'm thinking strongly about the stock muffler tunes for next season and getting a good setup with the nice quiet PB80 drive clutch, or maybe even the Tapp clutch which I hear is also quiet.

Funny how we think alike . I have just sold my mod stock muffler and bought a stock muffler. I had enough of that noise and will be doing the stock tune from that other guy. Hence the question about the air box.
 
I'll be going with an aftermarket primary because I just can't relax knowing that stock primary can throw a weight at me at any time. However, I Just can't give up the big power. Thinking I'll Probly up the anti with the header and upgraded fuel system for next year. I just can't see running a wimpy sled after being spoiled with this power.
