Excessive primary clutch rattle

Troy,
PB80 is like the old pb50 yes. Not to be confused with the Duclo which was a different design and Mfgr.

All the three cylinder four-strokes rattle the clutch, its just the way the harmonics work. The sidewinder is the same as the 1200's, Vectors and Nytros were and rattle the clutch at the same RPM's too. All the way up to 5000 RPM! Drives me nuts. When I turboed my first 1200 the rattle went away with my pinned TRA because I was able to load it heavier with weight. I'm hoping I can get the same effect when boosting the Winder up and loading it up with weight, if not I may have to throw the PB80 on to fix the god awful rattle, I don't want people to think I forgot to put oil in the engine after all!!! LOL!
Mike, this may be the solution for rattle SW clutch,my SW is loaded up on primary at 81 grams, and honestly it don't sound loud to me,now it was in a garage,so the noise should of been worse, but than again it does have a 3"sandale pipe on it,but I don't think it is loud at idle either. Cheers

its the power pulses of the motor and the intentional gap between the splined crank output and the splined hub....the gap is left to relieve the pulses that if solid would load in the pto crank bearing....truthfully id rather replace a pto crank bearing every so often than the rattle..

also..the reason the apex didnt have this problem ...the gear reduction unit took away the pulses...thereby the power coming out the gear reduction was "clean"

its also been said...a free flowing exhaust might change the pulses and thereby reduce the rattle...tighter weights to side bushings and weight face to roller would greatly reduce this along with taking the play out of the pins with various methods described....
Hi steve,i really don't think my rattle is all that bad,but like you just stated,it is loaded in the weights,so maybe there is something to this.

I assume with the Hurricane setup that includes a different muffler? If so have you heard it? Wonder if it would camouflage the rattle?

I can confirm that you don't hear the rattle with the Hurricane can on while riding. It's still there at an idle, but i think the can makes just enough noise to cover it up under power.

Bringing this thread back up to to see if anyone has seen up close the new clutch from Cat.
@yamamarc @KnappAttack @Turboflash
It’s funny you brought this back up. I spent about 5 hours last week getting my old winder ready for winter. I always remember how loud the Yamaha clutch was but man that thing was noisey. It sounded like it was ready to blow. If I were looking to get back into a 998 turbo I would go with Cat because I think they have been improving their clutching every year and Yamaha has done nothing.

When servicing Winders I split the primary and use Polaris button shims in behind the buttons to squish the 0-rings more. They fit perfectly and come in increments of .010, .005 and .003.
Greatly reduces the noise.
I should post some pics.

Every Yamaha I have owned has had a very noisy clutch. I would say it's just the normal Yamaha rattle. What makes it worse is the SW engine is so smooth and quiet all you hear when you ride is the track and the clutch.
This is my first noisy clutch on any of my Yamahas, and I have had many. My 2 strokes, SX-vipers-SRX-phasers-exciters. 4 strokes, RX1-Apex and Sidewinder. Out of all those, none were noisy with great exception to the newer designed Sidewinder primary. Maybe a combination of it being my first and only 3 cylinder(4 stroke), and the fact that Yamaha screwed this one up!

Before the Sidewinder clutch, Yamaha’s clutches were well known for reliability for many, many years!
Now the Sidewinder clutch Has ruined Yamaha’s legendary name in both reliability and toughness with their primary clutch! Just my 2 cents...

I think the first really noisy clutch was on my wife’s 2008 FX Nytro. I had a 2006 Apex and don’t remember it being that noisy.

Ok… Would you guys say it a tolerance issue, or a clearance issue with the connection between the stub shaft snd the motor ??? And Cannondale 27 is telling us this was by design and is manufactured in there ???

Can someone post a drawing of the actual layout of the design please… Like to see it on paper what is causing this … Thank you in advance….

It's been debated till the cows came home.
I'm more interested to hear some thoughts on Cat's new clutch from the tech gurus on this site.
Haven't seen one up close yet.

As we know all the manufacturers are dealing with clutching issues at varying degrees with the newer hyper sleds.
Its good to see a manufacturer that is actually taking steps to reengineer and improve on the OEM drive clutches...now if they can keep a handle on quality control from engineering to finished product...

Is it just me or does that clutch look a little on the light side

Not like the tap that is all structure
