Our spindles were bent the same way. Noticed by the ski being towed out and then the bottom half was bent in. I got my FX back today, dealer stepped up and took care of the bill for fixing the skid, and is going to run it through warranty. His mechanic never went and talked to the service guy that approves the warranty stuff. It helps to be friends with the owners I guess, at least it was taken care of. Hopefully this thing holds up now.

Snowmobiles are dirtbikes on snow. Things are going to break, and the harder you ride it the more chances you have to break something. If Yamaha made it strong enough to withstand every "Knuckle-Heads" abuse, then everyon on this site would be complaining of the added weight.
I have bought almost ever 1st year sled from Yamaha, starting with the 1992 Yamaha VMax-4, and I have never missed a day of riding due to a breakdown or other issue. But I contribute that to prevenative maintnance and no thrashing on the sled in conditions that are hard on it.
Think about this, jumping the sled 20 feet in the air and landing in a pile of mountain fluff is certainly deferent than coming off a packed snowbank and landing flat on the hard iced over parking lot.............
I am not saying people here are abusing their sleds, but I bet given the test of time, a sled that is ridden stupid hard will fail faster than one ran hard under good conditions.
Just my 2 cents.

The spindles do bend.. and not from abuse or jumping 20 feet! I'm a dealer and I bent my spindle just coming out of the ditch and landing on the ski at an angle. Needs to be beefed up in my opinion. In saying that, I haven't had one customer come back with a damaged spindle...so maybe mine was a freak accident

I was wondering if you checked your frame where the shock towers are attached to. Both of the guys I ride with with bent spindles have also tweaked that frame over. I'm thinking this summer is going to entail some major reinforcing. And no these sled weren't jumping 20 feet in the air and landing on ice.

My uppper clutch side shock mount (Frame) is bent I think the springs and the valving are too soft and bottoming out and causing damage. Same goes for the center rear shock, needs stiffer spring and valving to resist bottoming

Just what I'm afraid of. I was hoping to reinforce the mounts/pivots in the summer, but it looks like they won't last that long.

Well if its not one thing its another. Can you guys tell me how much clearance you have between your spindle and lower a-arm when you turn the handle bars all the way to one side? I have probably an 1/8 or so (guessing) and can easily push it with my hand to touch it. Today I clipped the side of a tree causing them to hit.
It doesn't look like the spindle is bent but there is a small pressure crack forming. Do any of you know if we can weld a plate on the outside of the spindle to incease its strength? Has any one done that yet?
Thanks

phazerboy, I've hit both skis, and both arms have put dents in the spindles.. not quite enough clearance down there, this weekend I hit it again, and now I have to dig into the steering
linkages cause I have about 4 inches of toe-in on the skis...
looking at the parts explosion, there are a few items that could have bent...

Yeah same here with the major toe in, when you find what bent please post it so I can look for the same thing.
As far as fixing these problems, I am thinking about putting a plate on the outside of the spindle and maybe a rubber stopper on the bottom a-arms? It's just nice to have the full turning radius to crank it one way or the other if you have to.

I definately agree that the valving and springs are to soft. Have you found anyone that has aftermarket spring with higher rates? Or has Yamaha got some yet, 2 weeks ago I couldn't find anything. I did put in the antibottoming kit, seems to help quite a bit in the rear. Even seems to slow that front shock down from bottoming. If you have any info just PM me if you wouldn't mind.

I am glad that I decided to wait upon the purchase of my newest Yamaha...Kind of waiting for 2008 now...If any of my friends buy them, I will inform them of these tidbits of information from your Real World experiences.
Like some other people, I ride mine hard, but within limits as I do not want to suddenly find myself in a bad situation due to a breaking tierod or steering component whilst I am miles from nowhere.
If anyone watched Survivor Man's Arctic episode, that was done 80 miles east of here. It is fairly warm today, only -25C with overcast skies...Thanks for all the info guys.

Phazerfly, where did you get that bottom kit? Hygear has all the springs you need. I'm not sure you can R&R the springs on the non-rebuildable mtn lite shocks- they're the worst peices of cr@p I've seen on a modern machine! I am new to sleds though....
