I understand what you are saying to do, but if I bring my secondary in that far(where the hurricane tool) tells me to, the secondary would have to be able to float out (away from the motor) at a minimum 4mm or more to line up at engagement. I have the clutch guard pulled off and see how it is all lined up or not for that matter, lol
Something is not right... is your motor twisted in the chassis? Have you ever flipped it or taken the clutch off with an impact?

The clutches are parallel with each other so no. I am pretty sure i found the issue, I have been trying to figure out what the stock clutching that comes on these sleds and i found out what is in my sled is not right. Both springs are not the recommended stock springs and who knows what the weights are setup like, I am taking it to the dealer. This sled was a demo sled but only had 40 miles on it. I talked with the dealer i bought it from to find out why it was clutched not to yamaha specs. I guess they were not able to find out where they aquired the sled from and they were no the ones to setup the clutching( none of this was told to me of course till now) So i have contacted Yamaha to see if they will fix this mess

Mine is not typical, in that i had to machine 4mm off initially, as my primary is inward about 1mm. Most will be fine if they machined less then 4mm.
I had to remove ALL SHIMS, and was tight to the snap ring, in addition to 4mm machined will rub.

I had 2mm in testing, as shown in pics...that set my ultimax flush. Post #195.Sorry I was talking using old Arctic Cat shims betwen the sheaves to set deflection. Just added as my post was missing information.
IMO the at idle and initial take off time with no float due to adjuster or even stock deflection design, is not a big deal. I think the float becomes available for those that may want it,quite early on. I understand what Mike is explaining to the one person who may MT ride in deep at very low speeds alot, but for most the stock deflection setup or adjuster wont be an issue.

Hey we got 2" of snow last week! Ha! May find time to get to the lake Saturday! I know its not like tuning for groomed trail, but I can get some belts broke in, set the RPM and maybe blow the track off of it! Someone stop me! Man I hate lake running.

mine did the exact same thing.....only wore one side of the belt on the inside.....i think it only does it on the mountain sleds in the deep snow...one belt on mine was completely wore through the kevlar after 25km on riding. Put the offset back to where it came out of the crate at and the belt still looks new. One of the other mtx in my riding group has experienced the same thing. Extreme belt wear on only one side of the belt on the inside. The wear is as if the secondary was too close to the engine.

Blew a new belt today at 12 miles. Both clutches blazing hot only riding at about 40 mph. I put the original plug back in so it can float again. Now belt and both clutches are nice and cool. WAY cooler than they were last year.

If you are blowing belts at 12 miles going only 40 mph you have some serious issues there. After reading this post it looks like some guys are trying to correct a problem that they think they have and are making it much worse. Where the clutches that far out of alignment when you bought the machine and blowing belts if so, it should have gone back to the dealer. Are there a lot of guys having problems with a stock machine. When you add 100 to 150 hp tune to these things something has to give and it looks like it is the belts and clutching. These things are not designed for that. When and if you get the clutching fig. out it will be something else breaking the chain or track I'm not sure what you guys expect, kinda like pulling out a 350 and installing a 572 and keeping the original drive train. Something is gonna break.

I'm pretty sure I have it figured out now. Not letting it float had it off too far at low speed. Like I said, once I let it float again I am now getting the coldest temps so far on both clutches and the belt. Last year it was fine at lower speeds but every time I made long runs at high speed it would grenade the belt. I haven't had a chance to really ring it out yet but I did run in up to 108 in a field and everything was nice and cool after. It definitely seems to be an improvement over last year and the only thing I have changed was the offset.

I'd say, Like the brake is stuck on and little gremlins under the hood slashing at the moving belt with a knife and sawzall. I just can not for the life of me, see even with total misalignment at slow speed would rip a belt apart like that one is, but there you go.
I've only ever blown belts at low mileage on machines that actually float the driven. No more floating driven's for me.
