This past winter when my starter went bad along with some other things my dealer called the yammi rep and had a conversation with him while I was right there, everything got taken care of 100%, the dealer and the rep both went above and beyond to make it happen.
Yeah Stud but your special!
I have had several warranty issues on mine that they did take care of, but the blown motor still leaves a bad taste in my mouth though. Just like in December 2004 when my motor blew on the RX-1 and found out the warranty began when I took delivery in August of 2002 and it was only 2 year warranty. So it was only good for the 02/03 winter and the summer of 04 when we all ride our sleds!!!!!

Well a blow motor from an aftermarket turbo system is kinda hard to argue, I'm more the less referring to the starter and other yamaha issues.

Yeah I know but it is a factory warranted, dealer installed item now, and at the time was told by the installing dealer that it would not affect the warranty.

Any more rumours on a new map for this coming season? Also I'm really having a hard time understanding how a company can have this sort of problem at this day and age. I understand that a new map takes time to be developed, but a starter has remaind the same for the last fifty yrs. Has there been a true poll started on the real number of starters failing? I realize that it is only as a accurate as the people that are truthfully doing it. Just some food for thought to get things moving before the season starts up
My starter lasted 3000 miles first time ,second one barely a 1000 and getting noisy! I got to see all the starters at the dealer they had replaced and they all had the magnet glue let go from the case .we were thinking this was caused by the first yamaha to have a lot more heat under the hood.i think some kind of heat wrap would fix it.
This is a separate issue. Nytros had same issue. Most times it's caused by a stuck solenoid or as Yamaha calls it a starter relay. The big one. Fix for your issue is replacing the starter and solenoid. You are correct the heat causes magnet failure but it's heat from the starter running constantly from solenoid sticking. These other guys have to fish pieces of gears out of the motor and it usually takes out stator and flywheel also. No signs of heat and magnets are fine usually.

Hard to know at all, my starter went with no warning at all, no kick back, no strange noises. Went to start it to load it on my trailer, made a kinda unpleasant noise, sounded like gears grinding, sled started, got it on my trailer, shut it off and tried to start it, more grinding but it did start, put it back in my garage and that was it, wouldn't start, it was locked right up. So I basically got 1 start out of it after the first start when I knew something was going wrong, so if u hear a bad noise, don't shut it off!

Is there an updated solenoid for the viper? I remember on the nytro I installed an updated relay and solenoid, and also installed a starter saver. My 15 Viper has had the starter kick back twice but that has been it, haven't had any issues and put 2000 miles on since then. I am hoping I don't run into any starter issues, it doesn't sound like fun at all, and I hate having snowmobile trips ruined. I also try to keep the sled cranking until it is started and haven't experienced any kick backs.

Very important...................if your battery seems weak at all replace it as a weak battery will cause starter issues. I am certainly not saying that is what is happening just that it helps to not stress a system that is already known to have failures.

Starter Failure Video. This starter failed in the worst possible place on a boondocking adventure.
It took about 10 guys to get this sled pulled up and out of the ravine to a point where it could be towed from.

Also thanks to everyone that got to participate in getting it up the hill. Glad it was the last ride of the year.
