How many vipers with starters going bad?

Lol .... Now that's funny .... Quality products don't make mistakes.... I could name a lot of them they have made and always said " normal wear "[/QUOT

I think " normal wear" can be "funny" or wrong when the part has obviously failed as well as the person who rides over or crashes into something and wants warranty coverage. I have seen it wrong both ways as well as correct and the people still mad. We are a funny group, we sledders.

My track started breaking off lugs with less than 1200 miles on it. Yamaha initially tried to deny coverage, but with some prodding from the dealer they agreed to cover the cost of the part not labor. Mighty nice of them  considering I paid extra for 5 yrs warranty. Glad I did not do the turbo.

You can guess what I answered on the survey about likelihood to purchase or recommend Yamaha products...

Not looking forward to additional potential runaround if my starter craps out.

Doing some research it looks like early Hyabusa had this kickback issue. Was bad enough to even crack the cases. In 03 they added a clutch to the idler gear. Required the new gear, cover and starter. They also saw a correlation in the kickback and weak battery but the updated parts were best solution. Costed those guys about $400 and labor. I would like Yamaha to address this either with the parts as a recall or a Tech bulletin that has no expiration. It's easy to ignore till you see this happen to a buddy and I believe quite a few of us have seen it now first hand. In my opinion Ecu update may help but the RIGHT way is a clutch.

My starter went on the last ride of the year. After spending a month gathering parts to change sled over for asphalt racing, and also getting a new starter, impulse gear, mag, and stator. I can tell you that it is possible to remove the mag side cover and replace the parts in there and flush, remove entire exhaust, remove plate off the bottom and oil filter, and you can change the starter without moving the motor at all. You can pull the starter out through the bottom. Overall its not that bad of a job.

When Shag and I started tearing down his sled...I didn't know what to expect. Now that it is done, it wasn't bad at all!

Sounds like replacing the started was a lot easier job then getting your sled out of that ravine where it quit. :D

I can help with the getting 'unstuck' but the repair I will leave to you experts! I can only imagine a job NosPro and Shagmam call not to bad

;)!

Has anyone heard of am updated part number for the starter? My needs to be replaced but I'm waiting in case they put out an updated starter.

I would not wait as I don't think there will be one. The starter is not the root cause as the are other things going on. Some parts take a while to get so my advice is to get it fixed and wait and see what they come up with. That way your ready for winter. JMO I did mine and it starts better than it ever has. I'm running it on asphalt.

It is for UNKNOWNS like this that I always get the 5 year YES- meaning the extended warranty .

I hope I never use it but if I do I will still be riding - their sled, and it's their $ fixing it.

I hope it is a small % of the sleds and stays that way.

I'm finally looking to fix my starter I'm up in Canada and from the Yamaha dealer they want 550$ for the starter.

I see a bunch on eBay listed as aftermarket fit for under 200$.
Has anyone tried one of the aftermarket ones.
this HTML class. Value is http://m.ebay.ca/itm

I'd have the dealer get in contact with yamaha, the starters are a major problem, even if you're out of warranty yamaha should back it up because there have been so many starter issues!
