How many vipers with starters going bad?

Im still patiently waiting for a new flash. I hope with 16 this problem is a thing of the past.

I'm finally looking to fix my starter I'm up in Canada and from the Yamaha dealer they want 550$ for the starter.

I see a bunch on eBay listed as aftermarket fit for under 200$.
Has anyone tried one of the aftermarket ones.
this HTML class. Value is http://m.ebay.ca/itm

Need to confirm but I believe viper uses same starter as nytro/vector. I would have good used oem Yamaha starters for $125 each.

It's the same starter as the nytro and vector.
Your dealer should cover it. Yamaha covered all my parts when mine went. It
was also out of warranty.

This is what I find frustrating about dealing with Yamaha through the dealer. You might get excellent service through your dealer, but if I have an issue and my dealer doesn't go to bat for me I basically am on my own.

I bought an aftermarket starter it lasted about 600 miles. That was about the same mileage as the original one. The nitro one is the same. I think all the sleds except the phaser had the same starter since 2003 on the warrior. Not 100% sure on that but this is what I remember.

I've read a lot on this issue. It really doesn't look like the starter was ever the problem. More to do with timing and the way the engine would "kick back".

But again i never had the problem so it's just my opinion

I never had any kickback issues with mine, it never started good, but always started, mine went at 2800 miles. There's an updated starter that's being put in, I don't think the starter is the issue but maybe the new starter is helping so it doesn't happen again.

Let's hope. All the technology in these machines and the damn starter is the problem.

A few the housing just broke so no pieces in motor. Those guys were lucky ones. Short of a real fix using the starter housing as a fuse may be best we are going to get. Still think they should add a starter clutch.

I agree, It is a Viper issue! Rode with many Nytros and Vectors with the same engine/starter but Yamaha CPU ect. No problems until the Viper. Now people think that they should redesign the starter to solve a Cat problem because its a poor design by Yamaha? Just get Cat to fix their problem! Piss poor CPU and injection.

I agree 100% that the problem is a result of the cat electronics controlling the yamaha engine in a viper. I have never sold a used vector or nytro starter to a customer that had one break like they are in the vipers.

I haven't had a problem yet with only 500 miles on my machine, but mine doesn't start nicely at all. Wish Cat would own up to their mistake and crawl back to Yamaha to get help fixing their problem. I would think with Yamaha's name on the line, they would want to do everything possible to fix what is becoming their problem with all warranty work.

I agree 110%

Even with the dealer going to bat I find it tough to get any satisfaction out of Yamaha. Could be because I called them on screwing us RTX LE guys and they are sore about it...

This past winter when my starter went bad along with some other things my dealer called the yammi rep and had a conversation with him while I was right there, everything got taken care of 100%, the dealer and the rep both went above and beyond to make it happen.
