How many vipers with starters going bad?

Is there an updated solenoid for the viper? I remember on the nytro I installed an updated relay and solenoid, and also installed a starter saver. My 15 Viper has had the starter kick back twice but that has been it, haven't had any issues and put 2000 miles on since then. I am hoping I don't run into any starter issues, it doesn't sound like fun at all, and I hate having snowmobile trips ruined. I also try to keep the sled cranking until it is started and haven't experienced any kick backs.

No updated Solenoid or relays on Viper. I guess there is just not much we can do. If a guy knew every possible part that could fail most people wouldn't even start there car and drive. Those unforeseen failures are what make it a adventure as long as you do your best to avoid failure.

Well I finally got my sled apart after the starter failed on the last ride this spring.
Starter is for sure no good. The pinion ring is worn at the last place it was againt the starter gears. You can see that there is a couple more teeth broke off they aren't there so I take it they are in the base or hopefully the filter. Is it possible to get the base pan off enough without removing the engine to clean it out?
Also the stator hub don't look right to me but ive never really looked at one before so maybe its normal wear.

Shagman got all the bits out by just taking side over off. Most were caught by flywheel magnets which in turn trashed the stator. Could fish around in pan with one of those extendable magnets to get more. Probably wouldn't hurt to glue a big strong magnet to outside bottom of pan to hold any missed ones in there. If you can't t pics on here send them to me. I will post for you. stvspiering@charter.net

Might be worth it to approach corporate Yamaha for reimbursement. I don't know how but have heard stories where they have taken care of others back in the day.

I bet someone here knows who to call or better yet email with photos. I would.

Got your pics up. By looks of flywheel the stator is probably bad too.

You will need to replace your stator and flywheel with the impulse gear and starter. All the same parts I replaced. Flush everything out good and reassemble. I did not take the bottom off my motor, that is up to you whether you do or not. I've run my sled all summer on asphalt with no problems. Make sure you lockite all flywheel and stator bolts except main center flywheel bolt just torque to correct spec.

The stator is ruined also. I just emailed Yamaha on the general email on the website , I'm not sure if there's a better to get in contact with them.

I went to my dealer and he took care of the rest. Yamaha paid for all the parts and I did my own work. Win win for both of us. I was out of warranty but the problem is theirs. You can't turn a key wrong and you can't stop kickback.

Second guessing purchasing a leftover 15' XTX because of these starter problems. Dealer can't tell me if it's still a problem or not. Keep hearing "only an issue with 14s", but looks like 15 are included too. I know warranty should cover, bit I ride a lot of backcountry by myself and this problem looks far too common not to cause reason for concern. Anyone hear anything more about a fix?

Well I'm glad I read thru every thread on this topic cuz my factory warranty was two weeks from expiring and i wasn't going to extend it because I'm going to install the hurricane turbo next year. I just called my dealer and spent the $645 for the Yamaha Y.E.S four year extended warranty. I figure when my starter blows and takes out everything possible cuz that's my luck I'll be money ahead..

I have a 14 and had no problems until I got the reflash after the first year of riding. Some sled have problems some not so much. the kickbacks are the problem but I wouldnt let the starter issue scare you off. My viper is still the best sled i have owned.

This was a big worry for me also as I do a lot of backcountry riding by myself. I spring order a 2016 s tx dx 146. Hoping this is taken care off now.

Rumour has the dealers getting the new flash in October at dealer meetings ??? True are not who knows something has to be done !!!
