Really I am not trying to make you guys crazy but has anyone experienced this. Sled on stand, close... but not level. Cold engine, warm shop (60 degrees F), oil level down considerebly (enough to have me post concern), add oil to full line, exact. Ride 78 miles, post concerns,... receive replies, curiousity has me go out to cold shop (-17c, 0deg.f) check oil, machine flat on floor, cold engine, now my reservoir is atleast 200ml over full!!! I know the implications of overfilling and therefore will siphon excess, just not certain where I went wrong and why such a drastic difference, breathing easier now that I am apparently not consuming as much oil as originally stated. Any opinions? please!
The engine must really be warm before checking oil. I go for a 1-2 miles run before checking it.

You may think you are using oil when you are not because dry sump systems are tricky. Nothing wrong with breaking it in by the book either, that is how I do it, certainly dont need cylinder honing.
Best I seem to be able to do is ride sled for 10 minutes, get sled on level surface and check oil....doing it same way each time is the best you can do and it still may vary.
Dry sumps are pretty forgiving, your low oil light will come on long before the motor is starved for oil. I dont check my level very often (once every 1000 miles maybe) as I have established my motor uses little if any oil.

Thanks guys, I will certainly run the engine prior to checking oil from here on, out. I will also endeavor to make the conditions more consistant.
Like everyone says you must warm up the motor. I had the same problem when I got my first 03. Thought you check it like a car after it sits an the oil runs into the pan. If it is not warmed up first and checked shortly after you shut it off some of the oil goes back into the engine and creates a false low on the dipstick. Then when you fill it it will be overfull. Check it the way the manual says.

Thanks, it's a little reasurring to know that I am not the only one to make this mistake! Manual says 10-15 minute warm up and I will adhere to this. Thanks again.

Okay, so I warm it up for it's 10-15 minutes then pull it back into the shop. Oil level is well over full indicator. Surenge oil from reservoir, low and behold I had to remove 280ml, Almost all that I had added. Live and Learn! Thanks for your patience gentlemen.

How much should it hold? I think I put 3.5liters in and mine and it reads full with the filter change.
