NEED A MOTOR!

Motors Out!

Motors out and easier than I thought it would be. Took me about 2 hours. I think it was easier than taking the skid out. The motor drops out the bottom and only three bolts hold it in place.

Now need to find a new one.

I installed a cheap PCV rollover valve and it must have froze in the closed position. The crankcase pressure built up and blew the lower oil hose off the bottom of the motor. The engine would crank over but slowly. If you grab the primary you can't physically turn it over even with the plugs out.

I'm going to strip it down tomorrow but my guess would be everything from crank to cam.

Sounds like you have main and/or connecting rod bearing damage. It wouldn't take long at all in this engine screaming at 10k RPM to do that with no oil.

Maybe check with a motorcycle shop to see if it could be rebuilt. Dealer might be more expensive. If it's just the bearings, it might not be too bad.

I talked to a guy in Barrie and $2500 with the exchange. He has a Phazer that he's parting out but no motor available. Kijiji Phazer

I'm leaning towards buying a good used sled that's been crashed or even one that's has no damage. I guy in MN has a '07 for around $2700 but a base model and no reverse, only 2500 miles. Should be able to part it out $1500 so the motor will only cost me $1200 and be complete so I can just slide it in.

Best scenario would be to find a low mileage crashed one.

Yeah, but with the exchange rate, the RIV fee ($250 even if you are parting it out) and whatever it will cost you to transport it, might make it expensive. Right now, $2700US = $2960CAD + $250RIV + Transport= $$$$

Why aren't you looking at rebuilding it?

If I buy a sled that's for parts and you don't registered you don't have to pay the RIV.

Wasn't considering rebuilding because by the time I buy a complete rebuild kit with gaskets then the cost to machine the crank, new pistons with ring and machine costs to bore the cylinders. Not to mention if the countershaft and the cams need replacing. I've gone down this road before with another small motor and when everything was done and three weeks of waiting I would have been better just to buy a good used motor.

The RIV will still nail you at the border, trust me. Even for parts vehicles, which is less ($70 +taxes), they will hound you until you pay it.

Ok, sounds like you've got the plan laid out. Now just to find a candidate. Rarer than hen's teeth :o|

That's such a load of crap. They nail you $70 bucks for bring in a parts vehicle and they charge tax on tax! The RIV was designed to keep substandard vehicles of Canadian roads. This is just a tax grab.

I should completely dismantle it before I cross and say I bought a tunnel, motor, suspension, skies etc. to avoid it.

I did manage to find a guy in Pennsylvania that has two motors both have 2,500 miles on them but I would be buying sight unseen. He wants $1700 shipped to the MN/Ont border.

I'm going to tear into my seized motor tomorrow and see what the damage is. Maybe I'll get lucky and it won't need anything. :drink:

Or maybe just some bearings. That would be luck in your bad luck. What speed or RPM do you think you were going when it happened?

High. It stalled as I was going down an embankment to get onto the creek. I though that's weird and started it up and layed on the throttle and stopped the second time.

Mine is still fine. I am puzzled though enough pressure to blow off that large hose and not blow off the PCV valve hose. Guess I will recheck lower hose clamp and make sure it is tight and make sure PCV clamp is slightly loose.

Puzzled you didn't get a low oil pressure alert.

Sorry to hear you had problems. But yes feel free to delete the thread if you wish.
