This happened to my son's 07 FX. It was new with less than 1000Km, 8GK-17641-10 as per the reverse issue tech bulletin. He put on the spare, which was an original 8GS-17641-00 and it worked even better for shifting into and out of reverse. The 8GK is specified for 2008+ and 2007 that have had the update done.
Anyone seen a belt before like this, especially a new one? I know that some have completely blown belts but this?

I have not seen that on a phazer but I have on other sleds.
Could be a defect from the factory in the belt but just measure the offset on the clutches to make sure they are to specs.

Is the sheave offset correct? Are the clutches running parallel to each other? The motor in the Phazer can adjust how parallel the clutches are by a threaded nut on the two front motor mounts. The left front adjustment nut is threaded into the left bulkhead and on Porkchop's sled the threads in the aluminum had turned to powder.

The right front side is threaded into a steel mount so It will be OK. When you check it and it it's OK install it back in covered with grease to protect against oxidization.

Just an update, clutch alignment and offset all good. It's been fine for the past couple of rides and reverse still works fine.
Who knows, maybe it just didn't like that belt.

I just serviced a guys sled & did full clutch cleaning & alignment.
It had an old 8GS belt & when I went to dealer they told me that was wrong & needed the 8GK. 2 rides on the belt & he blew it apart completely & is now complaining to me.
He but on the worn out 8GS & no issues with performance or reverse. I guess I'll be getting him a new belt this wknd!!
So are these belts shorter? Different compound? Why where they needed to switch in the first place?

It was part of an update to try and alleviate issues with reverse shifting for 2007 and is the standard belt for 2008+. I have no idea what the difference is between the two belts but I have a feeling it's the compound or construction because Gates lists the same belt for all year Phazers.

Reviving this thread because it just happened again but with the 8GS belt that was on it from last year. I do have some more info though. I think it may have some clutching issues because the engine will go above 12k RPM if going WOT and will sometimes hit the rev limiter. I rode it a bit when my son was cold from no windshield and I wanted to give 'er a bit to get a feel for it and was surprised to see the RPM. I rode it for about 10km and we switched again (he didn't like my MP). It blew not long after that.
I don't know what's in the clutches but have a feeling one or the other may have been modified by the previous owner. It had HyGear shocks all around (all damaged beyond rebuild), racing stickers all over it and a 1.5" Crossover track. I could swap the secondary between his FX and my MP and see how it affects the RPM.
Thoughts?

Possibly as simple as just being an old belt.
I did one on my 07 3 seasons ago. Similar looking but much worse. I do remember leading up to that run when it blew I felt something going on, rpms were higher and it just blew.
Replaced with updated one and still on there today.
Reverse update, I believe was just a washer behind helix. What I was told, can't confirm.

Last belt I blew rpms jumped up before and I could feel something was up.
Try a new belt, see what your rpms are at. How many kms on that belt?

Ensure there are no remnants of a previous belt either in the primary or secondary. Look closely you'll be surprised.

My son said it was a little better with the spare belt, getting about 11 800 RPM, which is an 8GK, that is until he rolled it and damaged the gauge pod. Still a bit on the high side though. Will keep an eye on it once the JB Weld cures on the pod.

I hope there isn't a bad batch of belts out, my FACTORY 8GK belt just gave up the ghost after ~5000 miles of use. I need to pick up a spare this week. Not one of my riding buddies gets more than 1500 miles out of a belt on other brand machines. Anyone tried an 8DN on a Phazer? I still have a low mileage spare on the wall from my sx600r
