Reason for Exhaust breaking??

I replaced the rivets with stainless steel button head bolts and nuts. I think this was the way to go over any type of rivet. Still nice and tight after a few thousand miles of fairly aggressive trail riding. The button heads look just like rivets and can be tightened or loosened with ease without drilling. I bought a bulk bag of stainless button heads that are about 1 inch long(also fit in a 3/16 hole same as most of the rivets as well as the matching low profile nuts.Dab with Loctite then hit with a cutoff wheel if necessary. Any loose rivets I get I take care of this way and never look back. This seemed to keep everything toward the front good, but my pipe still broke twice since then toward the back where the " X " is . This was a stainless mbrp pipe on an rx 1. Don't know if the stock pipe would have broke?

Looking at mine and i have the same issue shown in the video, but in addition to that i also noticed the bracket that holds the 2 y pipes in place is loose. Theres like 10 rivets that mount this bracket to the tunnel and every rivet looks tight but if you push on the bracket it just flops around.
Just i more thing to fix. Lol
Im just going to drill out all the rivets and rivet mine back together using multigrip rivets and blind rivet washers.

This sled has over 13000 miles on it and is now my backup incase my viper breaks.
i am not planning on investing tons into it unless i am forced to

When I did my doughnuts, I removed the bracket that holds the y-pipes. The clamps at either end are the only things holding them on. After inspection, two seasons,, and 2200miles, they look fine. 90% of my riding is done on Tug hill . I admit, I don't ride hard in my opinion, but I average 4-5 hrs on a 150mile ride.
.

Nate i think your on to something with that idea.
The thin tunnel aluminum is to thin and flexes to much.
another piece on top sounds like a good idea. i can't believe
the rivets lasted as long as they have with that thin stuff
constantly trying to flex.
GUKROKET i might try the bolts on the y-pipe hangers as this isn't
structural (well everything has some structural aspect to it)
i worry about the threads on the bolts in between the two pieces
being bonded together, stripping and grinding and eventually making the
hole bigger.Although thats whats happened with the rivets sooo.
if you could find some with shoulders would be better i guess.
Whats the difference in riveting or bolting something together with the same
size fastener. i understand rivets are the quickest/cheepest way but whitch one
is better structurally?

cheers all

Wow what a mess!!
Today i Drilled out and replaced 28 different rivets that hold my bulkhead and tunnel together. On top of that i found that all of the bolts that mount the steering gate to the frame were loose.
Every bolt made at lease 2 turns before they were tight.
1 bolt turned 3 complete turns.

Just 1 more thing for you guys with this issue to look at when you are in there

Kirkswim's war where all loose as well. Mount for exhaust has come loose again as well.

This might be a good thread to sticky as it seems pretty common.

Anyone have a part # for oversize aftermarket rivit's to take care of the front of the tunnel?
