Hey they can all have issues for sure. He said he was sick of this crap and was looking for a solution. Cat hasn't changed a lot of the crap designs since 2012 so what option is there? I loved everything about my Winder except some of the horrible Cat designs. I don't think you will see any real improvements till they come out with a completely new chassis. When will that be and is Textron on board with investing in a new chassis? I feel the only chance we will see something new and better is if Yamaha makes a full commitment and takes over Cat. Will they have that kind of commitment or will they just keep backing out further and further till they are no longer involved at all?Better not show him that picture of grenaded doo turbo chain case that was posted about 5 weeks ago. Makes a bushing issue look like small potatos
Personally I would love for Yamaha to buy Cat and built a new sled all Yamaha right here in the US. They can still market it a Cat and sell to the Cat loyal customers. The difference would be rather than a Cat with Yamaha decals it would be a Yamaha with Cat decals.

TD 225 HP , Chain finger tight less 1/2 turn , yamaha chain case oil.
Perhaps you are running the chain too tight? Clutchmaster ran his to spec and noticed that the bushing lasted longer.

Might want to re-read whole thread. Lots of discussion with theories, possible solutions, etc.

Lol pretty sure it's going to be wayyyyyy easier to find CAT / YAM grenaded chaincases than DOO. And that says a lot cause DOO chaincase outnumber all others on snow by a good margin. Just sayin'
I wish Blackdiamond would make a chaincase to diamond drive retrofit for these things. I'd pay the $3K and be done with it.

Change that gear out every 4-5000km when you change the engine and chain case oil if your concerned. Otherwise no more than 9-10000km. Plus a few other things.

Make sure there’s a thrust washer on both sides of the top gear, between the two snap rings!!

Yup. Change for 1 reason or another. In my case, after 2500 miles, bushing still looks like new but significant wear on gear teeth just from extreme pressure of chain against gear face. These boosted motors have lots of power and when coupled with lots of traction, there is huge pressure against the gears and chain! High fun factor!

I wouldn't put much faith in that silent chain they use in there, especially so if power is bumped up.

Maybe not...but I'll be able to tell you after the next season. Doubt the guys riding with me will keep em stock. We'll test em lol.
I know we tested these, that's why most guys are jumping ship in our group lol. The rest they are willing to deal with, but the chaincase is a deal breaker for most. You get no warning and usually it's not a super quick fix, so it'll ruin your day/weekend/trip.
Plus a sled with a bad chaincase is a PITA to pull.
BRP's chaincase design is way simpler, and IMHO that should translate to better durability. As for gear and chain choice I have no idea if they are any better or worst than CAT/YAM.

Who would ever have thought that guys would be leaving Yamaha for Doo because of quality and reliability issues? Yamaha used to build the best quality most reliable sleds on the market. The Winder delivers everything in spades except the two things Yamaha built it's reputation on. It's depressing.

Klr650r you will never know if that Ski Doo chain case will hold up to 300hp because the 900T will not make that much hp unless your riding buddies have a lot of money to get it there, it's not like a Winder with a simple reflash of the computer.

Sorry bud, ours are bone stock motors and they can’t take it. If BRP can take 195-205 they will be better. Hands down.
I don’t need it to hold 300HP, I need it to hold while I get to the front of the group, and keep holding once I’m there.
My buddies are broke from fixin’ these procross’ now lmao.
Sorry not sorry. It’s time for CAT to fix this stuff.

Well I guess you told me. Sounds like improper chain adjustment to me, i know of several stock Winders with 5000 + miles with no issues. I have changed the fluid in the chain case and adjusted chain before every season and so far so good.

Sorry I got a little jumpy. Been a long yet short winter lol.
See that’s where we differ in opinion again. Both ours were driven the same. Both were adjusted at the same time in the same maner. The 2017 now at 9000 some miles without a top gear issue. (did however have a screw fall out of my tensionner @7000miles)
The 2018 had a complete upper gear failure at less than 3000 miles.
We’ve had sleds on this chassis since 2012. We’ve run both asjusters in all the 1100 years, plus the OSP before Yam got theirs out. There were always issues with gears somehow. We had good luck with Scott Taylor’s setup, however we got word from a second owner once the top gear screwed up. (I don’t know the real extent of the damage or the reason, didn’t have access to the sled and the new owner didn’t really do it himself the dealer fixed him up).
Only issue I’ve had in a BRP chaincase since the XP personally is a bad reverse gear that reared it’s ugly head at 15000miles when I unloaded it from the trailer at the dealer to trade for my 2016. Still went forward, but wouldn’t go in reverse without a new gear. I can live with that at 10000 miles +. Still wouldn’t have left me stranded trail side.
Don’t get me wrong my BRPs where not without faults. Just looks like they tried to improve their product (hell you can even adjust the chain without taking the muffler off now) while other added bells and whistles.
