Sidewinder upper gear with oiling hole?

Guys I was reading the 18 tech manual and found reference to the oil hole. It is not supposed to be through bushing. According to manual it is supposed to put oil BETWEEN the bushing and gear! Who the heck thought that would work! Anyhow read that and ponder what have we gotten ourselves into.
Huh? Gotta be a typo or error in the publication I would think....

that makes no sense at all!

There must be a reason they didn’t put it through the bushing. Is the bushing made of a porous material?

No not porous metal, steel shell with bronze/Teflon coating. Yea that makes no sense at all. Probably made 5000 wrong in production and didn’t catch it, now they are covering their a$$es. I’ve got money that this works a lot better. We will see at the end of the season I plan on pulling the gear and checking it. Bushings are $3 though McMaster Carr. Surprisingly the shaft is 1” not metric.

I agree. I will find that. Its definitly not a typo. Someone just must have hit there head or something over there!

That is such a bunch of malarky! The bushing is a press fit. They just forgot to finish drill the hole after pressing in the bushing. I’ve had many manual transmissions apart and it’s common to see oil holes drilled for shaft oiling. If this bushing doesn’t hold up I’ll switch to an ampco bushing next year...time will tell.

because that bushing wears making the top gear slip out of forward gear. I have seen this 3 times.

This just happened to mine.

First ride of the season. Breaking in a new belt 40 - 50 mph. All of a sudden engine revs like I blew the belt. Confused I pulled over and checked belt ok. :dunno: Secondary turns and no go. Uh-oh. Chain case problem. Removed reverse motor and tried to engage drive with no success. :whine:

The good news is I got a chance to try my new tow strap made by STEADYMATE. I highly recommend it as it works very well.

Back to dealer. Mechanic knew what it was before opening it up. He has seen a dozen or so. Predominantly for 2018.

No oil hole in upper gear causes bushing to wear from lack of lubrication. This causes the gear to flop on shaft and in my case pop of the circ clip behind the gear towards the secondary clutch. This allowed 21tooth upper drive gear to slide on shaft towards Secondary and fall out of drive.

Confused yet, so was I. Mechanic had never seen circ clip out of place. He asked me if I had removed it and possibly never put it back in place properly? Looking for an explanation. It was my first time ever looking inside a magical chaincase. I get it now but before it was magic what happened in there. So, No.

New 21 tooth gear has a hole drilled through it; failed one does not. Failed one had grinded little teeth that meshes drive gear, second picture. This was caused by it falling out of drive and trying to go back in.

Long story made short. Have upper gear checked for hole and/or bushing wear. Check circ clip behind upper gear for proper placement in groove on shaft.

Luckily I wasn't alone or it would have been a long walk!:(

The new arctic cat gears have 3 holes

I highly doubt Borg Warner is making anything but HYVO. I believe those junk gears(Sintered) were back in 12/13 and not sure who made them back then. The 22 top gear many of us are using should be of high quality. The 1702-395 is the one we got last season from cat. And now for '18 they come with oiling hole. And it looks like the part number with oil hole is 1702-491.

2017-2018 9000 4-Stroke Models
Use 15 Wide Borg Warner top sprockets and chain, with a 13 Wide bottom sprocket. The top sprocket has a 33T external spline, but is different than the previous 4-Stroke models- for 2018, an oil hole was added so the chain will force oil into shaft to build an oil film to extend life of the bushing. The bottom sprocket has a 34T internal spline, and is the same as previous models.

Hey Dan what didn't you like about the 22 tooth top gear did it loose low end or midrange power or was it just hard on belts with a tune

If you zoom in on my picture of both gears you can faintly see it also has three holes.
Any idea on the part number for the 3 hole 21t gear? Looks like I will be putting one in this spring as preventative maintenance when I change the gear oil.

Do you have a part number for the bushing by chance ?

I drilled 2 holes in my early 22 gear with a carbide masonry bit, checked it this fall for wear there was absolutely ZERO wear on the bushing after one poor season of riding of just 1700 miles. Looked just like the day I put it in using 75-90 gear oil in the case.

On the other hand, the bolts holding the tensioner roller on were none to tight! I removed both and used red loctite and my impact to bolt that back together.

Another BS thing the consumer has to do with these sleds. What kind of engineers does Cat hire? I guess it could be worse. Poo is blaming assembly line workers for the crank bearing failures on their new 850. I guess they forgot to install a spacer on the crank during assembly. Probably workers who got let go from Cat after Textron took over.
